Skateistan’s first school in Johannesburg South Africa opened in 2016, and includes three classrooms, an office space, skatepark and sports area. In 2021, Skateistan began working in Atlantis in partnership with public schools, and will continue to expand programming to new students in 2022. Each week we have over 1000 children (boys and girls ages 5-18) attending to be part of Skateistan’s innovative and award winning programs.
Skateistan South Africa is looking for a Youth leadership Educator to be based at the Skate School in New Doornfontein Johannesburg.
As a Skateistan Educator, you will be responsible for implementing the Youth Leadership and Alumni curriculum with the direct supervision of the Programs Officer. A Skateistan Educator is enthusiastic, imaginative and energetic, with a passion for helping children reach their full potential. The Youth Leadership Educator is positioned to help youth set and reach ambitious goals, matriculate, and become agents for positive change in their communities. Although your primary focus will be on developing Youth Leadership curriculum and lesson plans, you will also be responsible for facilitating as well as assisting in any core program as needed – Homework Help, Skate and Create, Outreach. Skateistan Educators will also be responsible for Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning activities within programs.
Key Responsibilities:
Youth Leadership
Develop and implement Skateistan South Africa’s Youth Leadership curriculum within the framework of Skateistan’s programs and values
Help to plan and organize field trips, guest speakers and events for the Youth Leadership students
Lead dynamic workshops for participants based on the Youth Leadership curriculum
Contribute to creating safe spaces and new opportunities for all youth, making special efforts to include youth who may experience discrimination in society based on gender, ability, sexual orietnation, nationality, ethnicity, etc.
Preparation of teaching/class curriculum based upon Skateistan’s Educational Guidelines and instructions from the Programs Officer
Maintenance and monitoring of classroom equipment and supplies –
Report any incidents regarding safety, attendance, or student behavior to Programs officer/General Manager
Responsible for providing Volunteers with guidance and assistance as needed
Assist with MEL (Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning) activities as needed:
Enter and update individual student records into salesforce
File and update paper records and scan records onto drive
Create, print and laminate staff and student ID cards
Maintain the student library and oversee student checkout of books
Assist with translations as needed
Assist with outreach curriculum
Attend weekly training sessions
Provide monthly students testimonies
Provide updates on curriculum to Programs Officer through weekly reports
Alumni Program:
You will be the main liaison with Skateistan’s student alumni, helping to identify them, communicating with them about upcoming opportunities, and facilitating local chapter meetings, among other responsibilities outlined below:
Manage LinkedIn and Facebook pages for the alumni community
Call out, selection and video editing of alumni stories
Management of small awards processes
Management of local alumni chapter and local engagement activities
Management of speaking opportunities for alumni at Skateistan
Management of annual alumni engagement events
Online training for creating LinkedIn accounts
Identify and share external training and skill building opportunities and experiences
Working with MEL Educator to identify alumni
Embed information about alumni in the recruitment process for new students in the the Youth Leadership program
Research international and local opportunities (universities/scholarships or anything else relevant to the Alumni community)
Lead local alumni chapters
Skills required:
Minimum professional and academic qualifications
Degree in the field of education or equivalent qualification will be desirable.
Minimum years of experience
At least 2 years’ experience in teaching/training field
Interest in early childhood development
Strong program development skills
Planning capabilities and the ability to work with strict deadlines
Written and spoken English is preferred
