Partners In Health (PIH) is a non-profit, global health organization that fights social injustice by bringing the benefits of modern medical science first and foremost to the most vulnerable communities around the world. PIH focuses on those who would not otherwise have access to quality health care. PIH partners with the world’s leading academic institutions to create rigorous evidence that shapes more sound and all-inclusive global health policies. PIH also supports local governments’ efforts to build capacity and strengthen national health systems. As of today, PIH runs programs in 11 countries (Haiti, Kazakhstan, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mexico, Navajo Nation, Peru, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and the United States), where it provides direct care to millions of patients, through public facilities and community engagement.

Position Title: Writer/Editor

Reports to: Communications Manager

Location: Maseru, Lesotho

Position Overview

The writer/editor will create PIH-focused content for use in print and electronic formats, particularly the PIH website. As part of the Communications team, the writer/editor will participate in editorial planning and edit content from Communications team members and PIH staff.

Key Responsibilities

Content production (70%)

  • Work with PIH staff and the coordination office to identify and develop story ideas and turn them into compelling pieces.
  • Write interesting and jargon-free articles, profiles, and news stories that inform and engage PIH constituencies, including supporters, the general public, and health care professionals.
  • In conjunction with the Communications team’s production calendars, set, adhere to, and enforce multiple deadlines.
  • Schedule, upload and share content on PIH platforms e.g Website

Content editing (30%)

  • Gather, edit, and package information from PIH staff into content for our website, social media platforms, and other Communications and Development materials that is appropriate and appealing to a general audience

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism and at least three years of experience as a Journalist required
  • Proven ability to write and edit material across multiple platforms.
  • Proficiency in English and Sesotho required
  • Experience building strong relationships with sources.
  • Working knowledge of website content management systems.
  • Familiarity with Associated Press style.
  • Understanding of and ability to clearly communicate topics related to global health and social justice.
  • Ability to travel domestically as needed.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Exemplary communications skills; ability to work effectively with culturally diverse staff across departments and country.
  • Knowledge of social media and how to engage audiences on digital platforms in the public space is essential to this role.
  • Experience using social media platforms, particularly LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.
  • Interest in social justice strongly desirable
