Role Summary

Aligned with the WINGS 2023–2027 Strategic Plan, particularly Strategic Priority 1: Nurturing networks and strengthening ecosystems, the Africa Coordinator will play a key role in supporting and expanding WINGS’ growing network across Africa.

This role ensures strong engagement with members in the region, supports their participation in WINGS activities, and helps raise the global profile of African philanthropy. In collaboration with members and partners, the Africa Coordinator will strengthen understanding of philanthropy ecosystems, trends, opportunities, and challenges, while fostering exchange across regions and the global philanthropic landscape.


Key Role Objectives

1. Network Growth and Engagement

The Africa Coordinator is a primary point of contact for WINGS members in the region and will:

  • Work closely with WINGS colleagues across areas including enabling environments for philanthropy, policy advocacy, climate action, locally‑led development, SDGs, knowledge management, and multi‑stakeholder partnerships
  • Create and nurture regional dialogue through platforms such as the Africa Working Group, a learning and practice community focused on strengthening philanthropy in Africa
  • Design and deliver online and in‑person meetings and events
  • Foster member collaboration, innovation, and engagement
  • Support member recruitment and onboarding in collaboration with the Network and Engagement team
  • Strengthen participation of African members in WINGS’ global activities
  • Collaborate with the Collective Intelligence and Action team to ensure regional relevance in global initiatives
  • Coordinate with other regional and global working groups to enhance cross‑regional exchange

2. Strengthening Philanthropy Support Ecosystems

In collaboration with Pan‑African, sub‑regional, and national members, the role will:

  • Plan and coordinate ecosystem‑strengthening initiatives at regional, national, or thematic levels
  • Identify capacity‑building needs within the philanthropy sector
  • Increase collaboration and sustainability across local ecosystems
  • Co‑convene key stakeholders and leverage WINGS’ role as a global network

3. Advancing WINGS’ Mission in the Region

The Africa Coordinator will also:

  • Support WINGS’ broader work in capacity building, knowledge generation, communications, and resource mobilisation
  • Develop and track detailed project plans aligned with regional strategy
  • Analyse key needs, challenges, and opportunities within Africa’s philanthropy ecosystem
  • Coordinate all Africa Working Group activities
  • Design and implement webinars, meetings, and in‑person events
  • Prepare proposals, reports, and contribute to ongoing fundraising efforts
  • Identify and support strategic partnerships
  • Coordinate research, publications, declarations, and knowledge outputs
  • Monitor regional trends, innovations, and key actors
  • Ensure activities are delivered on time, within scope and budget (including compliance with EU funding requirements)
  • Maintain comprehensive project documentation
  • Strengthen representation of African philanthropy support organisations in WINGS’ global forums
  • Represent WINGS at conferences, events, and speaking engagements

Reporting Line

The Africa Coordinator is part of the Network and Ecosystems Team and reports to the Network and Ecosystems Director.


Requirements

This is a consultant position (40 hours per week). The successful candidate must have:

  • Residency in an African country
  • Fluency in English and French (written and spoken); Portuguese is an advantage
  • At least 7 years of relevant professional experience
  • Experience in project or network coordination in the nonprofit sector
  • Experience in philanthropy or philanthropy support organisations (highly desirable)
  • Understanding of the philanthropic and civil society landscape in Africa
  • Fundraising experience, including foundation proposal writing (required)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders and represent WINGS externally
  • Global mindset and cultural awareness
  • Proficiency with computers and database systems
  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree or equivalent experience is an asset
  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time

Compensation

  • USD 30,000 – 40,000 per year
  • Compensation is commensurate with experience and geographic location
