VACANCY: WATER PRODUCTION OPERATOR – MAFETENG


Purpose of the Role

The Water Treatment Plant Operator ensures that the water treatment plant produces reliable, safe drinking water that meets all regulations, operating manuals/procedures, and Water Works standards.


Key Tasks

Operations:

  • Conduct handover with the previous shift operator.
  • Monitor the status of the plant and pump stations, including parameters such as flow, pressures, chemical feeds, levels, and quality indicators; investigate variances and make necessary adjustments.
  • Prepare chemicals (automatically or manually by lifting packaged chemicals into designated hoppers/dosing tanks) to ensure adequate supply for the shift.
  • Check stock levels of raw lime, polymers, and other chemicals.
  • Monitor equipment running parameters and log results hourly or as per standard operating procedures.
  • Rotate duty and standby equipment to ensure balanced running hours.
  • Collect representative treatment process samples; perform quality tests (turbidity, pH, chlorine residual, etc.) and take appropriate action based on results.
  • Maintain plant records, including logs, daily diaries, and chemical inventories, ensuring compliance.
  • Produce quality water to meet demand while maintaining production losses below 10% by minimizing spillages.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, including lubrication, operating adjustments, and cleaning.
  • Receive work assignments, service priorities, and other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Clean the workstation as per cleaning schedule.
  • Conduct backwash sequences based on filter running hours.
  • Conduct desludge sequences based on settling tank running hours.
  • Ensure adequate pumps are available to achieve the required plant inflow.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to environmental, electrical, or mechanical emergencies to maintain compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Perform first-line operational and maintenance inspection and testing of system assets (e.g., standby pumps, chemical feeders, compressors).
  • Identify repair needs, spare parts, and tools to inform budgeting.

Reporting:

  • Report incidents or accidents immediately.
  • Report defective equipment and follow up on maintenance.
  • Report on stock levels of process chemicals.

Health and Safety:

  • Use provided PPE while performing duties.
  • Participate in and support all Health and Safety programs and initiatives, such as inspections, meetings, hazard assessments, and incident tracking.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a similar role.
