CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the following position tenable in the Ministry of Health.

Ward Attendant

Grade: B
Number of Positions: 1
Reports to: Nursing Assistant

Job Summary

Responsibilities include maintenance of basic hygiene, patients’ comfort and good nutritional status, infection prevention and control, and control of linen.

Main Duties

Maintaining Basic Hygiene Practices in the Ward/Unit

  • Give daily bed baths, oral and nail care to very ill patients and give bedridden patients water to wash by the bedside.
  • Take care of patients’ hair to prevent infestation with lice.
  • Turn bedridden patients and attend to their pressure parts regularly to prevent pressure sores.
  • Do damp dusting of beds and bedside lockers to maintain a healthy environment.
  • Keep patients’ dishes clean to avoid breeding of flies and cockroaches.

Patients’ Comfort

  • Do bed making and change linen daily and when necessary to ensure a clean and crease-free bed.
  • Conduct regular bedpan parades and avail bedpans in between as and when necessary.

Prevention of Cross Infection

  • Sluis and disinfect sputum mugs, urinals, bedpans and soiled linen to destroy bacteria.
  • Air and disinfect the mattress and bed after providing the last services to a client who has either passed away or been discharged.

Monitoring of Bed Linen

  • Count and record movement of bed linen, pyjamas and gowns to and from the laundry in the linen book, which is counter-signed by the laundress.

Maintaining Patients’ Good Nutritional Status

  • Feed patients who require assistance with their meals as prescribed to sustain their optimal nutritional status.

Other Assistive Tasks

  • Take specimens to the laboratory and collect results for review and maintenance of patients’ management.
  • Label and register patients’ belongings in the kit book and lock them away on admission.
  • Accompany patients to the X-ray department, Operating Theatre, Mortuary, etc., in the absence of Porters.

Qualifications

  • COSC/LGCSE/GCE
