Position: Volunteer Academy English Tutor
Department: Trust | Academy
Line Manager: Academics Coordinator
Objective
To tutor English to eight boys aged 12–15 in their first year of high school. Key responsibilities include following a special intensive curriculum targeted at teaching one student basic written, spoken, and reading English; and providing regular assessments and development reports on each boy’s progress.
Main Accountabilities
1. Generate an accelerated English program for foundation-phase needs
1.1 Develop an accelerated English curriculum based on researched models and results from the English Assessment conducted in January 2024
1.2 Prepare an intensive individual English teaching plan for students experiencing significant language challenges
2. Design educational and engaging learning activities
2.1 Develop group and individual English activities that promote learning in fun and practical ways
2.2 Facilitate extra-curricular sessions aimed at improving English proficiency
2.3 Create weekly English assessment exercises
3. Monitor and evaluate progress
3.1 Track and evaluate progress through weekly exercises and school assessments
3.2 Report progress to Academy staff
3.3 Compile reports and make recommendations for follow-up interventions
4. Link English lessons to other subjects and standardized tests
4.1 Work closely with the Academics Coordinator to align English teaching with school requirements
4.2 Coordinate on language preparation requirements for standardized tests such as SAT, TOEFL or IELTS
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
• Diploma or Degree in Education
• Minimum six months teaching experience
Desirable
• Diploma or Degree specializing in English Language
• Experience working with children with special needs
Work-Based Skills and Competencies
Essential
• Full proficiency in written and spoken English
• Computer literate, strong MS Excel skills
• Positive attitude, flexibility, independence and strong organisation skills
• Good interpersonal and communication skills
• Accuracy and attention to detail
• Willingness to learn and adapt
• Willingness to work weekends and some evenings
Desirable
• Passion for working with young people
