Applications are invited from suitably qualified local candidates for the following vacant position tenable in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition.

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Principal, the Vice‑Principal shall facilitate the implementation of institutional policy; provide research and consultancy services; mobilise institutional funds; supervise and develop staff; prepare the institutional budget; and lecture in a subject appropriate to his or her training.


Main Duties

1. Facilitation and Implementation of Institutional Policy

1.1 Reviews regularly the existing structure to ensure alignment with institutional policy.
1.2 Establishes income‑generating programmes for students to overcome unemployment.
1.3 Reviews curriculum to ensure relevance of training programmes and adherence to policy.
1.4 Reviews academic programmes to accommodate new challenges facing agricultural development.
1.5 Interprets institutional policy to heads of programmes and coordinators/divisions to enhance mutual understanding and support.
1.6 Makes follow‑ups on established income‑generating programmes mounted by ex‑students to ensure their sustainability.
1.7 Facilitates disciplinary actions against students who fail to abide by rules and regulations guiding examinations (copying).

2. Provision of Research and Consultancy Services

2.1 Facilitates development of research projects to respond to pertinent agricultural programmes.
2.2 Designs training programmes for local and regional consumption to address agricultural educational needs.
2.3 Encourages dynamic and high‑quality consultancy services related to agriculture to instill the culture of self‑reliance.

3. Mobilisation of Institutional Funds

3.1 Offers consultancy services to generate income for the institution.
3.2 Facilitates organisation of in‑service training courses for extension workers for income generation and community development.
3.3 Writes proposals to donor agencies to solicit funds to support staff research.

4. Development and Supervision of Academic Programmes

4.1 Collaborates with programme coordinators quarterly to review programme plans (short courses, time‑table etc.).
4.2 Collaborates with the academic board annually to facilitate curriculum review sessions.
4.3 Monitors programmes periodically to ensure alignment with institutional objectives for smooth running.
4.4 Facilitates meetings with the academic board for development of the institutional calendar on examination dates, evaluation of students, approval of results, and preparation for graduation annually.
4.5 Facilitates timely occurrence of institutional ceremonies to ensure smooth running of all functions (e.g. graduations).

5. Supervision and Development of Staff

5.1 Liaises with heads of programmes to identify training needs of staff in order to develop a training plan.
5.2 Assesses progress of supervisees in line with the Performance Management System (PMS).
5.3 Liaises with programme coordinators to fast‑track implementation of the training plan.

6. Preparation of Institutional Budget

6.1 Convenes meetings with programme coordinators to facilitate preparation of the institutional budget and ensure alignment with set guidelines.
6.2 Reviews the budget quarterly to ensure it matches programme activities.
6.3 Monitors utilization of the institutional budget to ensure alignment with planned activities and makes adjustments accordingly.

7. Lecturing

7.1 Prepares lesson plans relevant to the subject matter to ensure proper delivery of curriculum content.
7.2 Lectures in the relevant course, sets tests and examinations to assess student knowledge.
7.3 Records results for presentation to the academic board for evaluation and approval, and provides feedback to students.
7.4 Conducts relevant practicals regularly to complement theoretical knowledge.
7.5 Conducts research to update or address problems as required.
7.6 Coordinates the drawing of time‑tables, annual calendars and reports to facilitate proper information flow.
7.7 Ensures timely preparation of examination papers and results to facilitate smooth examination processes.

8. Facilitation of Implementation of the Institutional Strategic Plan

8.1 Interprets institutional strategic plan to programme coordinators and heads of administrative sections to enhance mutual understanding and support.
8.2 Puts in place necessary arrangements and resources to facilitate implementation of the institutional strategic plan.

  • MSc in an agricultural‑related field
    OR
  • BSc in an agricultural‑related field
1.2 Experience
  • Three (3) years’ work experience in an administrative/teaching position for MSc holders.
  • Five (5) years’ work experience in an administrative/teaching position for BSc holders.
