Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified local candidates for the following positions tenable at the Senate Office. The closing date for the applications is 12th JUNE, 2026

Position Details

  • Position: Usher
  • Responsible To: Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod, the incumbent will provide comfort for the Honourable Senators and visitors in the Chamber by setting the heating and cooling system when the need arises and assisting in the production of Hansard.

Main Duties

Maintenance of Order in the Chamber

  • Acts as usher and doorkeeper at meetings of the Chamber
  • Attends to the Honourable President during Senate sessions and conveys messages among Honourable Members of the Senate
  • Is in charge of the admission and seating of visitors in the Chamber
  • Avails himself/herself at all times during Senate sessions
  • Assists in the production of the Official Report (Hansard)
  • Assists the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod in ensuring that security protocols are observed at all times
  • Performs any other duties according to the exigencies of the Senate (Chamber) as directed by the President, Clerk to the Senate, or Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod
  • Is able to work long and unpredictable hours, including after office hours
  • Displays tact and discretion, and works in an impartial and non-partisan manner

Job Specification

  • COSC / LGCSE with a pass in Sesotho and English

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read and write in both Sesotho and English
  • Ability to deal with the public and have excellent interpersonal skills and a friendly disposition
  • Willingness to help other people and possess strong customer service skills
  • Hardworking and willing to work overtime for extended periods
