The Botswana Defence Force (BDF) is generously covering the training venue, board, and accommodation for the duration of the course. Participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodation and travel, including any visa requirements and applicable allowances.
OCHA’s Civil-Military Coordination Service (CMCS) and its Regional Office for East and Southern Africa (ROSEA) will lead the training event, which brings together 24 participants from four interdependent emergency communities: a) humanitarian personnel from the UN and humanitarian entities; b) civil protection practitioners, including from the UNDAC and INSARAG networks; c) United Nations Member States and their donor agencies, and d) military personnel from Member States and Intergovernmental Organizations.
The objective of the training course is to: a) define the concept of humanitarian civil-military coordination (UN-CMCoord), including the five sets of UN-CMCoord guidance, b) assess the UN-CMCoord environment in various operational contexts, and c) understand and support UN-CMCoord efforts related to humanitarian access and protection outcomes in sudden onset disasters and complex emergencies.
The course offers participants practical knowledge in humanitarian action and civil-military coordination, fostering collaborative decision-making processes and effective interoperability between civilian and military practitioners. Applications from military personnel working in operations, logistics, or CIMIC functions, as well as humanitarian field staff, particularly from the Southern Africa region, are encouraged. Prior experience in emergency response is an asset.
