Applications are invited from suitably qualified local candidates for the following positions:

JOB TITLE: TV Reporter

GRADE: D

RESPONSIBLE TO: PRODUCER

DEPARTMENT: BROADCASTING – LTV

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Producer, a TV news reporter collects and analyzes information of interest to the public. The job entails identifying, researching, writing news stories and logging video clips that are necessary for a television news bulletin.

MAIN DUTIES

1. Generates Stories

1.1 A TV news reporter generates story ideas, cover news events and breaking stories.

1.2 Looks for unique, relevant and urgent topics to bring to the public.

1.3 Develops interesting new angles of stories that have already been covered.

2. Conducts Interviews

2.1 Conducts interviews to be broadcast live and/or recorded.

2.2 Conducts prior research to ask interesting questions about the interview subject.

2.3 Collects information on relevant topics to report accurate and timely news.

2.4 Contacts information sources, make follow-ups on leads, fact-check findings and writes them for broadcast.

3. Reports on- air

3.1 Reports live from events as they unfold or records and edits material to create prerecorded items.

4. Video Logging

4.1 Communicates with the cameraman on the footage required for a news item and selects appropriate clips for a news bulletin.

REPRESENTATIONAL DUTIES

  1. Liaises with media houses, international organizations, and TV stations.
  2. Attends workshops and conferences on matters relating to production operations.

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Strong writing and excellent live reporting skills
  • Ability to convey information in a clear, concise, and conversational manner
  • Ability to interact professionally to build relationships and sources • Strong research skills, digital literacy, and objective logical reasoning.
  • Be able to work calmly and effectively under pressure, react quickly, and meet tight deadlines
  • Have an interest in news and current affairs
  • Be able to learn how to use a variety of broadcasting equipment
  • Have knowledge of the law, ethics, and industry regulations around TV production.

JOB SPECIFICATION

  • Diploma in Journalism/ Media Studies/ Mass Communications/ Broadcasting.
  • Two years’ experience in radio/TV production will be added advantage.

RESPONSIBILITIES

For Work of Others

The job requires the incumbent to maintain smooth working relations with senior reporters, sub-editors, editors, programme producers and librarians and Head of News.

For Property (Equipment, Materials and Finance)  

The job places on the incumbent responsibility to ensure the security and safety of the studio equipment, computers and tapes in his or her custody.

For Effect of Errors

The incumbent is responsible for the errors committed by junior staff in the execution of their duties such as failure to observe safety and operational procedures, which could result in loss of property, equipment, data and software or failure to render the service.

For the Safety of Others

The job places on the incumbent responsibility to enforce and ensure that proper safety and operational procedures are followed to ensure the safety of personnel working under him/her.

COMPLEXITY

The incumbent has the authority to use their own creativity to enhance the structure of the programmes.

PROBLEM-SOLVING

The incumbent regularly solves problems that are directly related to TV production and programming.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The incumbent is expected to work independently under supervision by the Producer and Sub-editor.

DEXTERITY

The job requires good eyesight, listening skills and mental capability to record programmes or produce live productions. It also requires the artistic resourcefulness of the individual.

The job requires little physical effort.

Emotional Effort

Usually, the incumbent will find himself/herself under immense pressure especially during news or live productions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Unfavorable Conditions

The incumbent may work under very cold conditions within the studios or away during field coverage.

HAZARDS The job holder may be exposed to unprecedented attacks especially during elections or coups because of unsatisfactory electorates or stakeholders.
