JOB TITLE : TOURISM OFFICER

JOB SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Senior Tourism Officer, the Tourism Officer will be responsible for facilitating and promoting tourism development in order to maximize economic benefits accruing from tourism activities; undertake tourism research; facilitate and foster community participation in tourism; identify and conceptualize tourism projects; stakeholder coordination; and prepare departmental workplans and budgets.
MAIN DUTIES
- Undertake Tourism research
1.1. Work closely with the Assistant Tourism Officers, local authorities and communities to identify and earmark attractions and sites for tourism development;
1.2. Develop a system for tourism information dissemination;
1.3. Undertake research and provide recommendations on community-
based tourism projects;
1.4. Provide senior management team with reports and other necessary information for effective planning and development of the sector.
Facilitate and foster community participation in tourism
2.1. In liaison with Assistant Tourism Officers encourage creation of community tourism associations or similar bodies;
2.2. Identify community training needs and facilitate community training/ courses to encourage networking and economic growth;
2.3. Facilitate development of community tourism enterprises e.g. pony- trekking, tour guiding etc
2.4. Develop partnerships, networks and mentoring programmes within tourism destinations for sustainable resource usage;
2.5. Facilitate links between rural tourism enterprises and other tourism businesses.
Conception and Identification of tourism projects
3.1. In line with the objectives of the Department, identify potential tourism project ideas and activities;
3.2. Monitor implementation of the tourism strategy with a view to ensuring that community and community benefits are maximized.
Coordination of activities by tourism stakeholders
4.1. Liaise from time to time with Assistant Tourism Officers, members of the tourism private sector and communities to ensure effective co- ordination in developing the tourism industry in accordance with the acceptable standards.
4.2. Works closely with the Senior Tourism Officer to monitor the implementation and effectiveness of tourism programs regularly to ensure their compliance with the required standards.
Preparation of Workplan and Budget.
5.1. Prepare own workplan and budget annually to guide efficient work performance and ensure timely delivery.
5.2. Work closely with the Senior Tourism Officer to prepare integrated national plans in collaboration with other stakeholders
5.3. Prepare quarterly and annual reports.

The incumbent must always ensure the safe-keeping of official documents in the office.
(b) For Effect of Errors
The incumbent must ensure that there are minimal errors in registering tourism resources evaluated. Such errors could result in the
deterioration of services in the tourism industry.

The incumbent may be expected to occasionally travel a long distance walking when conducting a research and surveying tourism resources especially in the remote areas which are inaccessible by a vehicle.

This factor is considered minimal in this job, however, the incumbent may be expected to occasionally work beyond normal working hours as well as work away from base when conducting field work.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Candidates for direct entry should:
Hold a Masters Degree in Tourism and Hospitality obtained from a recognized University
Or
Degree in Tourism and Hospitality and at least 3 years experience in Tourism as an Assistant Tourism Officer.
