Timber Quality Controller (Gade P13)

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To control the quality of timber entering the Woodyard as well as the allocation of deliveries to the correct chipping line, through interaction with contractors and other parties.

REPORTING TO : Chargehand Chipping

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Physically inspect every timber delivery into the mill to ensure quality – road and rail.
  • Direct timber to a specific chipping line based on species (fibre typing requirements), and availability of the lines.
  • Ensure timber deliveries comply with Forest Stewardship Councils (FSC) requirements.
  • Determine if the load meets the timber quality specifications as per WYD004 Inspection & Testing.
  • Reject timber loads that do not meet the quality requirements in accordance with WYD007 Inspection & Testing.
  • Complete the Quality Inspection Book for rejected loads.
  • Advice Chargehand (Chipping) and relevant Forestry/Contractor of rejections and the reasons.
  • Monitor timber delivery drivers to ensure they comply with mill PPE and other safety requirements and refuse entry to those that do not comply.
  • Inform timber delivery drivers of any work taking place in the Woodyard/Chipping areas that may impact on safety.
  • Interact with Woodyard timber handling contractor to ensure smooth flow of traffic and resolution of any related issues.
  • Report any vehicle that is deemed unsafe/un-roadworthy.
  • Report any housekeeping issues (e.g. fallen logs) to Forestry/Contractor for action and follow up to ensure completion.
  • Report any accidents/incidents/near-hits to direct supervisor.
  • Perform any other task as instructed at an equivalent level of complexity.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with any mandatory safety requirements

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

  • Grade 12 / N3 or equivalent NQF 4
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a production environment.
