The Homestead (Projects for Street Children), based in Cape Town, works to help Street Children reconstruct their shattered lives, and to provide prevention and early intervention services to children and families in disadvantaged communities. The Homestead helps over 150 street children a year, has 90 boys in residential care, and helps over 250 chronically neglected and abused community children each week.

The Homestead seeks to appoint Social Workers for Community Prevention and Early Intervention, to be based in Cape Town.

  • Drop-in Centre Valhalla Park
  • The Homestead Drop-in Centre Khayelitsha

The purpose of the position is to help Street Children reconstruct their shattered lives, and to provide prevention and early intervention services to children and families in disadvantaged communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with children and their families in Valhalla Park or Khayelitsha.  As such it is necessary that the social worker appointed has Afrikaans as their home language (Valhalla Park) and Xhosa as their homes language (Khayelitsha) and is willing to be based and work in these communities, do family visits into informal settlements, etc
  • Provide social work, school after-care, school attendance, crises and family intervention support services to the children attending the Homestead Drop-in centres
  • Do assessments, develop and manage IDP’s and provide therapeutic services
  • To refer children when necessary to statutory services
  • To coordinate and run the daily Drop-in Centre programme, including holiday programmes, parent training, etc

Requirements:

  • Officially South African recognized Social Worker qualification
  • Current registration with the SA Council for Social Service Professions
  • Valid SA driver’s licence (learners licence does not qualify)
  • Proof of local, Valhalla Park or Khayelitsha, community knowledge and work experience
  • Fluency (written and spoken) in English, as well as IsiXhosa or Afrikaans
  • Computer literacy Microsoft (Word, Excel, email, social media and the web)
  • Willingness to work with children from the most challenging of communities, and to be based in these communities
