This is an opportunity to become an ukiyo-e artist like Hokusai and create works in collaboration with modern-day carvers and printers.
The best three works will be awarded with a total of 500,000 Yen. The best and the second best works will also be made as a woodcut print by contemporary artisans and awarded to the winners as a complete print.
Since 2009, the Adachi Contemporary Ukiyo-e Award has been discovering the future ukiyo-e artists and creating works in collaboration with modern-day carvers and printers. Ukiyo-e artists like Hokusai and Hiroshige, among others, were specialists in creating sketches for ukiyo-e prints.
Ukiyo-e prints, which are loved around the world as an iconic part of Japan, are produced through the collaboration of an artist, a carver, and a printer. Hokusai and Hiroshige, among others, were ukiyo-e artists called “eshi,” who were specialists in creating sketches for ukiyo-e prints. The ukiyo-e they created were truly mirrors of the times, reflecting social conditions and historical backgrounds.
For this Award, The Adachi Foundation is calling for 21st century ukiyo-e artists that depict “ukiyo” or “the current times”.
