Purpose:
Global civil society alliance, CIVICUS, is seeking for a Communications Manager consultant to manage, coordinate and lead the development, implementation and review of efficient communication and media strategies to establish CIVICUS as a trusted brand thus enabling the organisation to deliver to its strategic direction and operational goals.
Scope and objectives of the Communication Manager Consultant:
The consultant will work on a 15 day per month basis at the CIVICUS offices in Johannesburg and from home when appropriate.

Provide strategic communications support across CIVICUS.
- Develop and coordinate implementation of CIVICUS communication strategy in alignment to 2017-2021 Strategic Priorities.
- Develop, monitor and review CIVICUS communications, media and digital media strategies.
- Develop project/ cluster/ event focused comms strategies and plans.
- Ensure informed, cost-effective strategies, and innovative channels and tools are utilised to inform and support the core activities of CIVICUS and stakeholders.
- Engage proactively with partners, constituents, and members, to ascertain needs, share information, knowledge and tools to enhance their own communication abilities and effectiveness;
- Promote the CIVICUS brand to enhance the organisation’s visibility, reputation and credibility.
- Communication strategies/ plans created and shared.
- Departments and projects are supported as required.
- Diverse and effective strategies, channels and tools are utilised.
- Partners, constituents, and members’ effectiveness are enhanced.

Manage communications cluster to produce best practice, strategically aligned communications materials and activities across CIVICUS and its partner organisations.
- Work with team members to implement projects, events, activities, based on joint conceptualisation and planning.
- Develop and implement capacity development plans, to enhance knowledge and skills across issues and technical capacity (ie expand skills in comms related software)
- Identify and implement time, cost, and impact maximisations strategies – ie introduction of new tools, review and enhance systems, integrated approaches.
- Outputs and activities completed as per project and activity plans, including but not limited to –ICSW, State of Civil Society Report (SOCS) , and departmental plans.

Facilitate proactive, efficient and purposeful media and social engagement to enable greater visibility for CIVICUS and civil society issues generally
- Coordinate cross-cluster production of communications across newsletters, media releases, social media, etc, including receive, edit, and distribute media statements/ alerts/ and other external communication.
- Acquire, build and maintain strong relationships and networks with key communications partners including key media and civil society communications service providers and practitioners;
- Monitoring web, social media analytics and media statistics.
- Lead production of occasional publications, including annual report, research reports, etc, and multi-media.
- Ensure social media growth
- 20 staff produced OpEds, 15 partner/ member OpEds
- Growing media list and media relationships supported.
- Analytics and media statistics demonstrate increasing visibility.
- Publications completed including Annual Report and research reports.
- Multi-media products available.

Manage financial and human resources for effective delivery of the Communications unit goals ensuring annual objectives, targets and budgets are met
- Ensure updated and good use of management tools – year plan, branding calendar, action calendars.
- Manage consultants, service providers, and payments.
- Year plan, branding calendar, action calendars and other management tools updated and effectively used.
- Consultants and service providers’ delivery is supported.
