Job Summary

The Temporary Communications Officer will support the Commission in planning, coordinating, and implementing internal and external communication initiatives to promote public awareness, enhance stakeholder engagement, and strengthen the organisation’s corporate image.

The incumbent will be responsible for developing communication content, managing media and digital communication platforms, coordinating public awareness campaigns, and ensuring the consistent dissemination of accurate, timely, and engaging information across all communication channels.

The role requires a highly motivated, creative, and organised individual with excellent communication, writing, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement communication strategies that promote the Commission’s programmes, activities, and corporate image.
  • Prepare, edit, and disseminate communication materials, including press releases, speeches, newsletters, media statements, reports, and other publications.
  • Coordinate media relations and serve as a liaison between the Commission and members of the media.
  • Manage the Commission’s website and digital communication platforms to ensure information is accurate, relevant, and up to date.
  • Develop and coordinate public awareness and stakeholder engagement campaigns using appropriate communication channels.
  • Draft and manage content for the Commission’s social media platforms to enhance public engagement and visibility.
  • Coordinate media coverage of Commission activities, events, press conferences, and official functions.
  • Support the planning and execution of communication activities during elections and other Commission programmes.
  • Monitor media coverage and public opinion, and prepare media monitoring and communication performance reports.
  • Ensure consistency in the Commission’s branding and corporate identity across all communication materials and platforms.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to develop communication products that support organisational objectives.
  • Coordinate the production of communication materials, including brochures, newsletters, fact sheets, posters, presentations, and audio-visual content.
  • Respond to public and media enquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Maintain effective relationships with media houses, development partners, stakeholders, and service providers.
  • Keep abreast of emerging communication trends, digital technologies, and best practices to improve organisational communication.
  • Perform any other communication-related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Mass Communication, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field.
  • A minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years’ post-qualification experience in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Information, or Public Relations.
  • Demonstrable professional experience in both broadcast and print media.
  • At least three (3) years’ experience at a decision-making level in a newsroom, communications department, or equivalent institution.

Preferred Skills

  • Demonstrable leadership experience in the civil society sector, particularly in organisations involved in governance, democracy, human rights, media freedom, or constitutional advocacy.
  • Experience engaging with government institutions, development partners, and civil society organisations at senior level.
  • Experience in organising high-level public events, media briefings, and press conferences.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Lesotho and regional media landscape.
  • Past experience in Lesotho’s elections as a news reporter, election observer, or through direct work with an NGO on electoral or governance programmes.
  • Experience in drafting press releases, reports, and communication materials.
  • Proven experience in media monitoring, reporting, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate advocacy campaigns and capacity-building initiatives.
  • Fluency in English and Sesotho (written and spoken).
