The SADC Secretariat is inviting suitably qualified, experienced, innovative, result oriented and self-driven individuals to apply for the following positions under the Accelerating momentum towards SRHR for all: sealing the Cracks of service delivery for vulnerable and at-risk Population in SADC Project at SADC Secretariat in Gaborone, Botswana.
Primary Purpose of the Job
•To support the Senior Programme Officer In-Situ Conservation in the implementation of programmes and activities aimed at promotion of conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources.
Duties and responsibilities
- Supervise land preparation, daily farm management activities for planting/management of germplasm and bulk crops
- Characterise plant genetic resources
- Carryout germplasm evaluations
- Carry out and supervise crop pollinations in the field.
- Harvest germplasm and bulk crops
- Collect daily climatic data like temperatures, rainfall, sunshine hours share with all staff.
- Prepare monthly and annual climate data reports and share with SPGRC management
- Maintain routine irrigation system functioning and ensure proper maintenance of irrigation equipment
- Ensure that the SPGRC surroundings are kept clean, the lawns and grass trimmed & mowed at all times
- Establish and maintain the SPGRC arboretum, including the Field Museum/crops demo plots.
- Supervise junior employees working under In Situ Conservation
- Prepare and submit work reports daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly for In Situ activities.
- Maintain In Situ Stores records up to date
- Maintain register for junior workers under In Situ conservation
- Maintain and manage farm equipment/tools use and maintenance registers including servicing schedules.
- Prepare and submit to the SPO all seasonal input needs on time.
- Conduct field data collection and do data summaries for decision making.
- Maintain important data for In Situ technical programmes.
- Prepare requests for protective clothing for all staff in In Situ conservation.
- Conduct plant genetic resources conservation in vitro by tissue culture.
- Design and conduct/plant field and lab experiments.
- Conduct experimental data analysis using common data analysis packages.
- Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time

Qualifications and Experience
Education
- A Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture (Plant/Crop science, Plant Breeding, Crop Improvement, Agronomy, Plant Protection, Crop Protection, General Agriculture) from a recognized institution.
Specialised knowledge
- General agriculture
- Field and laboratory experiment management
- Seed science
- Knowledge of in-situ conservation techniques and practices
- Proficient in the use of computers and computer software relevant to the position.
- Ability to carry out experiments and data analysis.
Experience
- At least 5 years of experience in practical/hands on agriculture and plant science (managing field experiments).
