With regional offices on four continents, partners around the world, and global and regional initiatives, HCWH is leading the global sustainable health care movement.
Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH), a program of Health Care Without Harm, is an international network of hospitals, health care facilities, health systems, and health organizations dedicated to reducing their environmental footprint and promoting public and environmental health. GGHH has 976 institutional members in Latin America, which represent the interests of over 24,000 hospitals and health centers in the region.
Contract Description
Health Care Without Harm is looking for a professional, detailed oriented, technical consultant to support the development and execution of the second edition of its “Training Program on Climate and Health Leadership”. The first edition , which was carried out in 2019, convened over 640 health professionals from the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region with the goal of increasing awareness of the urgency of climate change, and building capacity among health professionals in the region to advocate for climate action in their health care institutions, in their communities and with their governments.

Health professionals are among the most trusted voices and reliable sources of information in our societies; unfortunately, awareness of the health impacts of climate change and the human toll of fossil fuel driven air pollution is not yet generalized among them. Therefore, HCWH LAC is launching a second edition of its Training Program to strengthen its capacity building efforts and ensure that health professionals in the region have access to relevant information and skills, and to the tools they need to contribute to the health argument for climate action. Since the goal is for these resources to translate into climate leadership, this second edition will be much more focused on supporting health professionals to develop better communication and advocacy skills, including media training.
Another important component of the second edition will be the urgent need for fossil fuel phase out, including evidence on how fossil fuels affect human health in different ways. HCWH LAC has partnered with the Secretariat of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty initiative to develop the Training Program in a way that contributes to the broader goal of fostering the growing movement of health professionals advocating for climate action, and building the social backing that governments require to adopt fossil fuel phase out strategies.
Fewer approaches are more powerful to foster social awareness and mobilization against climate change than the understanding of how it is directly affecting human health. Health professionals can be a pivotal actor to place the health argument for climate action and fossil fuel phase out at the center of social narratives. The voices of those who are already active in this space, and of communities affected by the compounding health and climate crises, must also be amplified. Therefore, the mission statement of the Training Program is “Health professionals in the LAC region have the capacities and tools to become active voices in the global fight against climate change, including by leading and supporting the mobilization of their communities to demand the urgent and equitable phase out of fossil fuels”.

. Requirements:
Consultancy Goals

  • Supporting HCWH’s team in Latin America in the design of the program, which will have a minimum of six modules, at least one of which will be dedicated to advocacy for fossil fuel phase out.

The campaign should include specific references to the lived experience of local communities in the regional context, as well as a call to action (which may be in the form of an invitation to sign an open letter from health professionals to LAC governments).
