POSITION: TECHNICAL ASSISTANT
DEPARTMENT: LESOTHO METEOROLOGICAL SERVICES
GRADE: C

LOCATION: METEOROLOGY
JOB SUMMARY
Reports directly to Technical Officer and carry out observations and transmits them to Weather Forecasting Office hourly during normal working days, sends reports to Head Office and represents the Department in district meetings including Disaster Management meetings.
MAIN DUTIES
- Carries out weather observations and transmits them to Weather Forecasting Office hourly during normal working days.
- Measures temperatures, rainfall, sunshine, soil temperatures, evaporation, humidity, wind speed and wind direction, pressure, clouds (type and height), visibility, present and past weather.
- Carries out agricultural observations twice a month (for Agro-meteorological purposes).
- Fills in crop monitoring and hail forms.
- Fills in synop, metar and climate forms.
- Ensures that all instruments/equipment of manual station are in good working condition.
- Represents the Department in district meetings including Disaster Management meetings.
- Compiles and prepares filled forms.
- Sends reports to Head Office at the end of every month.
- Ensures that all sensors of Automatic Weather Station (AWS) are in good working condition and continuously relay information to the central server.
- Reviews and checks reports from Meteorological Observer and Meteorological Reliever before sending them to Head Office.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
COSC with Credit in Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry plus at least four (4) years relevant working experience as Meteorological Observer.
OR
G.C.E plus at least five (5) years relevant working experience in the Technical Department.
