Team Lesotho advances to semi-finals on the Global Citizens Innovative Solutions SDGs Challenge

157

The inaugural Global Citizens Innovative Solutions SDGs Challenge invited any and all to come together in teams to brainstorm ideas, formulate plans, and craft presentations of viable, lofty, and positive opportunities to help solve problems afflicting billions as well as ease demands taxing our planet.

Machabeng College students joined forces to represent Lesotho in this campaign where they’re competing with numerous countries. They have chosen to address the issue of gender equality with gender based violence(GBV) as their target.

The team opted for GBV upon the realisation that violence against women has increased exponentially in Lesotho and our neighboring country in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and does not show any signs of stopping.

Did you know that:

  1. A 2018 survey shows that 25 percent of Basotho believe that it is justifiable for a man to raise his hand at his spouse?
  2. In 2014, 84 percent of Basotho women reported that they had been
victims of violence in their lifetime and 40 percent of men have admitted that they have been perpetrators of abuse towards women in their lifetime?

The Lesotho team has now made it to the semi-finals and their video has been uploaded on YouTube.
