Team Leader: Seed Technology Programme ( P12 )

Sappi Southern Africa – Forests requires a Team Leader: Seed Technology Programme t o manage all day-to-day seed processing, cleaning, testing and trials at the Seed Centre at the Shaw Research Centre. Duties include closely supervising subordinates for consistently high quality of work outputs while maintaining SHEQ compliance and good staff morale.

This role reports in to the Research Officer

The main responsibilities of this job are:

  • Responsible for consistent supervision and management of own team (and contract labour on occasion) to ensure the timeous and successful completion of multiple daily, weekly and seasonal tasks.
  • Responsible for planning, organising and creating regularly updated work plans to ensure that all tasks are completed to a high level of quality.
  • Responsible for receiving, storing and documenting cones and capsules from Seed Tech OP team. Overseeing and implementing appropriate seed processing techniques including dipping cones, kiln drying cones and capsules, tumbling cones and hand extraction and cleaning of seeds.
  • Supervising and carrying out routine seed germination testing in the laboratory and nursery.
  • Assisting with seed research trials, taking counts and measurements.
  • Safeguarding the Sappi seed stores by monitoring cold room temperatures, conducting audits, correctly storing seed.
  • Establishing and maintaining up to date records relating to all research and production activities.
  • Collection of various data from selected projects and encoding data into the appropriate spreadsheets or databases according to best operating practice.
  • Participation in weekly and monthly meetings to report on implementation of operational plans as well as written progress reporting in the form of a monthly report.
  • Responsible for line management functions with regards to SHEQ (as safety representative for team) including attending monthly SHEQ meetings and reporting on incidents and near misses.
  • Following all company policies and procedures

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Grade 12
  • Relevant supervisory experience and training advantageous
  • Two years relevant experience in seed technology
  • Knowledge of research and production methodology, administration functions and SHEQ standards would be advantageous
  • Computer Literacy
