JOB TITLE: SYSTEM SUPPORT OFFICER
Responsible To: Senior System Support Officer
Main Purpose of the Job
To contribute towards the availability of the network and database infrastructure, servers and client workstation platforms and application, database and network services infrastructure for Judiciary users.
Main Duties
1.0 Network Administrator / Operations
1.1 Administers and supports different types of networks: LAN, Virtual Private Networks, Intranets, and Extranets.
1.2 Server installation and management: troubleshoot server problems.
1.3 Creates and manages network groups, uplinks workgroups to other networks, and ensures communication on the network.
1.4 Implements and manages access to shared folders.
1.5 Implements and manages access to shared devices e.g. printers, faxes, etc.
1.6 Implements and manages remote access to server resources: configure VPN etc. access; monitor remote access activity.
1.7 Monitors user activity in the server environment.
1.8 Performs software upgrades and troubleshooting.
2.0 Database Administration
2.1 Backs up and restores the database in case of system failures.
2.2 Applies software upgrades with minimal disruption to Judiciary system users in a timely manner.
2.3 Takes preventative action to avoid system failure.
2.4 Takes backups on a daily basis.
2.5 Maintains database maintenance plans of systems.
3.0 Desktop Support
3.1 Monitors the performance of desktop software installations manually and automatically.
3.2 Performs software upgrades and troubleshooting.
3.3 Implements and manages file systems i.e. manages access to shared files, manages use of offline files, manages file encryption, etc.
3.4 Administers hardware devices and drivers: controls access to printers and troubleshoots device drivers.
3.5 Implements network services correctly: configures LAN connections, internet connection, email services; monitors firewall activity; implements browser security settings.
4.0 Help Desk
4.1 Receives and logs support calls.
4.2 Initiates problem diagnosis.
4.3 Identifies and isolates problem causes i.e. application, desktop applications/operating system, database, network, etc.
5.0 Other Duties
Performs any other tasks as may be assigned from time to time by the Senior Officer.

2. Network Administration
2.1 Effective maintenance of network server environment including physical security measures.
2.2 Effective network groups created and operational.
2.3 Appropriate configuration and network connectivity maintained.
2.4 Disk storage, disk performance and distributed file system optimised.
2.5 Well-managed and appropriate access arrangements (e.g. server resources, shared folders, shared devices, web services).
2.6 Reliable server operation with effective backup and recovery arrangements.
3. Desktop Support
3.1 Successful desktop software installation and upgrades.
3.2 Effective investigation and resolution of system software and hardware problems.
3.3 System performance monitored and optimised.
3.4 Appropriate management of the desktop environment.
3.5 Network services correctly implemented.
4. Help Desk
4.1 Support calls answered promptly and logged efficiently.
4.2 Accurate initial diagnosis, problem and cause identification.
4.3 Problems referred to appropriate support person.
4.4 Production of useful technical articles for helpdesk user guidance.
Knowledge and Skills
Education and Training
A university degree in Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, Software Engineering and/or relevant discipline.
At least a minimum of two (2) years of experience in IT support or any other related experience.
Management of a medium to large Windows-based client-server environment.
Experience in enterprise-grade backup solutions.
Ability to diagnose and repair basic hardware issues.
Experience with database administration.
Added advantage: experience in SQL database administration and ability to troubleshoot various software and hardware.
Other Relevant Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of networks and operating systems (network and desktop).
Ability to prioritise and work on own initiative when required.
Ability to work flexibly and as part of a team.

Responsibilities for Work of Others
This is an entry-level position and does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Complexity – Problem Solving
The incumbent is expected to solve own work-related problems that may cause the Justice Sector or Judiciary to fail to meet its objectives. The nature of the duties requires technical diagnostic skills as shown above.
Supervision Received
The incumbent must have the ability to prioritise and work on own initiative when required. Refers to relevant IT/IS policy and standards before taking action. Consultation with supervisors occurs regularly.
