Surveyor – Durban

ABS Europe are recruiting for an intermediate level Surveyor to be based in Durban, South Africa. Candidates applying for this position must already live in the vicinity of Durban.

In this job you will perform work involving conventional surveying practices by reporting on vessels and other marine structures. This will be during and after construction and relative to compliance with the applicable requirements for maintaining the vessel in Classification with ABS. These will meet associated statutory and special service requirements related to Safety of Life at Sea, Loadline, Tonnage, Cargo Gear, and Pollution Prevention certification.

Your duties will include:

1. Visits vessels, marine structures, and manufacturers for routine survey activities.

2. Performs work that involves conventional surveying practices but may include moderately complex problem resolution and coordination of activities among other disciplines.

3. Prepares technically accurate and timely survey reports, and responses to letters, faxes, and other forms of communication.

4. Work directly with clients to identify and resolve problems in area of technical expertise.

Qualifications
To be considered for this role you should possess the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent in appropriate technical discipline is preferred, with a minimum of five (5) years experience in an Engineering or Survey capacity within the marine industry. Appropriate certification and/or licenses in area of specialization as may be required.
  • A degree or equivalent from an institution recognized within a relevant field of engineering or physical science (i.e., a degree or equivalent – minimum two year program, depending on local education system); or Relevant qualifications from a suitable marine or nautical institution and relevant seagoing experience as a certified ship officer
  • Ability to read engineering plans and have a basic understanding of shipbuilding practices and vessel operations.
  • Ability to perform surveys in the prescribed format.
  • Knowledge of related technical interfaces required for group project work.
  • Knowledge of ships’ engineering systems and machinery.
  • Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, pertinent information relative to assigned area of technical expertise.
