The Examinations Council of Lesotho [ECoL] invites expressions of interest from suitably qualified local candidates for the following position;

POSITION : SUBJECT OFFICER – BIOLOGY AND PHYSICS

Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Subject Manager, the Subject Officer – Biology and Physics is responsible for the development of assessment instruments, marking and grading to ensure valid and reliable evaluation of candidate’s performance. The incumbent should strive for assessment practices comparable with regional and international education standards.

Duties:
• Implements strategies aimed at improving the quality and credibility of assessment of science and the education system as a whole.
• Develops curriculum content and assessment standards in collaboration with the National Curriculum Development Centre to establish clear and transparent performance standards.
• Ensures the alignment of instruction with assessment of Biology and Physics in the schools and at the national level.
• Identifies qualified service providers for the achievement of quality assessment and evaluation of learners’ performance.
• Oversees different stages of the development of assessment documents to maintain quality products.
• Assesses candidates using valid instruments and contemporary assessment strategies that cater for different assessment needs including candidates with special needs.
• Monitors different stages of marking and hence evaluates the quality of items and identify gaps in examiners’ content knowledge.
• Supports the implementation of marking and related standards to ensure valid evaluation of candidates’ performance.
• Periodically assesses the availability of markers and trains them to maintain a sufficient pool, for valid and reliable evaluation of candidates’ performance.
• Evaluates the impact of assessment innovations in the education system for appropriate remedial intervention.
• Supports bench-marking initiatives in assessment of Science and other processes that are aimed at achieving regional and international recognition of Lesotho’s educational qualifications.
• Supports curriculum developers, Education Officers, Inspectors and Teacher Trainers and teachers on matters related to assessment for harmonization of information and practices as well as fostering good working relations.

Qualifications and Experience
• A Masters Degree in Education with specialisation in Biology and Physics, experience in examination cycle plus three years in managerial position or a Degree in Education with specialisation in Biology and Physics plus a minimum of five years related experience in the field
• Certificate in Special Education will be an added advantage
