Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Senior Manager – Assessments, the Subject Manager – Mathematics, Sciences and Applied Sciences is responsible for managing the development of examinations and other assessment instruments/materials, including assessment packages and other materials that support instruction.

The incumbent will manage all resources required for the development and administration of assessment instruments/materials, including human resources, finances, strategy, security standards, marking standards, grading, individual reports and related research. The incumbent will also be responsible for managing a team of Subject Officers responsible for assessments at primary and secondary education levels.

Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Managing Subject Officers to ensure effective performance and delivery of quality outputs.
  • Supporting the departmental budgeting process and ensuring effective and efficient utilisation of resources.
  • Managing and coordinating the training of personnel involved in assessment development.
  • Preparing and submitting quarterly reports on activities within the area of responsibility.
  • Managing performance standards relating to question paper development, marking and grading in collaboration with Subject Specialists.
  • Managing the verification of mark inputs and authorising changes to marks in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Managing assessment-related activities for primary and secondary education levels.
  • Managing the development and review of qualifications and assessment standards at primary and secondary education levels.
  • Contributing to the annual review of the Examination Administration Handbook and other assessment-supporting documents.
  • Developing and overseeing marking standards for primary and secondary education levels.
  • Managing grading processes relating to Subject Officers and Assistant Subject Officers.
  • Ensuring the accuracy and integrity of examination timetables.
  • Managing and coordinating examination marking arrangements.
  • Ensuring that appropriate provisions are made for candidates with special educational needs.
  • Participating in the annual departmental budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Senior Manager – Assessments.
  • Reporting regularly to the Senior Manager – Assessments on activities and matters relating to the area of responsibility.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Option 1:

  • A Master’s Degree in Education, Mathematics, Science, Applied Science, Management or a related relevant field, with a minimum of three (3) years’ relevant experience in the examination cycle.

OR

Option 2:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Science, Applied Science, Education or a closely related relevant field, with a minimum of five (5) years’ relevant experience in examinations and/or assessment.

Additional Requirements

In addition, the candidate must have:

  • An academic background in Mathematics and/or Science/Applied Science, relevant to the subject areas under the position.
  • Proven experience in examinations and related assessment processes.
  • Proven experience in managing complex processes and skilled teams at a senior level, preferably with not less than five (5) years’ relevant experience.
  • Proven ability to lead and build teams to deliver high-quality work within prescribed deadlines.
  • Proven administrative experience in managing complex, high-volume workloads within critical deadlines.
  • Experience in successfully leading teams through periods of organisational change.
  • Experience in managing people, process and technology change.
  • Experience in research and the application of research findings to improve assessment practices.
  • Evidence of using and achieving sustainable results through Quality Improvement Programmes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders, particularly school principals.
  • Computer literacy, particularly proficiency in the MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, meet demanding deadlines and maintain a positive attitude while providing exemplary customer service.
  • Ability to work independently, meet targets and deliver results.
  • Ability to adhere to the organisation’s policies, procedures and compliance requirements.
