Summary Background
Children and Adolescents Are My Priority (CHAMP) is a 5-year, USAID-funded orphaned and other vulnerable children and adolescents (OVCA) project led by mothers2mothers (m2m) with support from two resource partners Grassroot Soccer and Zoe-Life.
Working across Mpumalanga province, South Africa, CHAMP will utilize evidence-based interventions and innovative approaches to contribute to USAID’s strategic objective of improving the wellbeing of OVCA, through comprehensive and coordinated evidence-based interventions that strengthen the capacity of families and communities to care for OVCA in sub-districts with high HIV prevalence.
The target groups include children and adolescents living with HIV, single and double orphans, children and adolescents living with people living with HIV, adolescents exposed to alcohol, drugs and gender based violence, and children of sex workers. The target age group overall is 0-17 years, with a particular focus on adolescents (10-17 years).
Project Goal: To reduce HIV incidence and improve the health, wellbeing and resilience of OVCA exposed to, living with or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS
The project has five objectives:
- Improve HIV and TB treatment success among OVCA through early identification, linkage to care, adherence and retention in comprehensive HIV care, treatment and support services
- Increase HIV risk avoidance among OVCA through HIV and sexual and reproductive health education, and access to youth-friendly services to promote safer sex practices (consistent condom use, contraceptive use, delay of sexual debut)
- Improve the safety of vulnerable children, adolescents and youth by strengthening linkages and coordination of child protection and prevention of gender-based violence services
- Strengthen the stability of vulnerable children, adolescents and youth by increasing opportunities for household economic security and linkages to social protection
- Strengthen schooling opportunities for vulnerable children, adolescents and youth by supporting retention and progression through schooling and linkages to vocational training
