Yizani Sifunde Consortium is a Liberty Community Trust funded project made up of three organisations (Nal’ibali, Wordworks and Book Dash) that seek to address some of the literacy development challenges facing the Eastern Cape.

They are looking for a motivated individual with a passion for literacy to join the Yizani Sifunde Consortium.

The role of the Story Sparker’s is to promote the Nal’ibali campaign and inspire the community, ECDs and schools to establish and participate in reading clubs. They work with a core team of volunteers to set up and support reading clubs, help volunteers access reading materials, and provide regular mentorship and inspiration. They engage with parents and stakeholders and organise community activations to highlight the importance of reading. They also observe, report on and capture data re activities taking place at the schools and communities.

To be a Story Sparker you must have a Matric, be computer literate, and be able to demonstrate previous work experience. Most importantly, you must be passionate about growing the love of reading in your community, be interested in children, and able to engage with children and teachers. You also need to live within walking distance from one of the local Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres / creches.

Duration: 7-month fixed term contract.

Role and responsibilities:
Reading material distribution from central locations to ECD centres, reading clubs and other distribution points.
Run your own reading club/s with children.
Support ECD centres to implement reading for enjoyment activities.
Support reading club leaders to start and run reading clubs and use reading materials.
Provide regular mentorship and inspiration to volunteers.
Run activations in the community to raise awareness about reading for enjoyment and where to find reading materials (e.g., pass out supplements at public spaces; present Nal’ibali at e.g., parent’s meetings or other community events)
Act as a brand ambassador and promote the Yizani Sifunde Project in the community.
Identify prospective partners in the community.
Support partnership initiatives as well as the volunteer programme
Report on key activities e.g., reading materials distributed, events held, reading clubs registered.
