St Joseph’s Home for Chronically Ill Children is a private, but state funded home that provides convalescent care and medical services for up to 145 children who suffer from chronic and debilitating illnesses. To this end St Joseph’s Home has four dedicated wards plus our Sunflower HIV ward.

St Joseph’s Home seeks to appoint a Teaching Assistant to be based in Cape Town.

This is a part time position working three hours every morning (9 to 12) under the guidance of the Western Cape Education Department Learner support teacher.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Learning Support Teacher to implement the Individual Support Plans of learners who experience barriers to learning
  • Liaise with child’s previous school to get academic material when required
  • Implement the plan agreed upon by the School Based Support Team
  • Provide a retrospective report on support rendered to the School Based Support Team Co-ordinator
  • Assist with the preparation, distribution, collection and storage of Learning and Teaching Support Material
  • Keep record of services rendered
  • Assist with classroom organisation and management
  • Assist with the development of perceptual skills
  • Listen to learners reading
  • Consolidate sounds and words with learners
  • Consolidate the learner’s number concept by using suitable strategies and support material

Requirements:

  • Minimum of two to three years’ experience in education for grade 6 and above – essential
  • Fluent in at least two RSA languages
  • Computer literacy
