The purpose of this position is to ensure Asset Integrity and Process Safety (AIPS) during operation and execution of maintenance and projects. As a Sr. Reliability and Integrity Engineer, you are responsible for go/no go decisions during execution based on codes and legislation logged in the Inspection & Test Plans (ITP’s) and flagging non conformities on AIPS and share required recommendations. You will also ensure that flagged non-conformities have a follow-up or mitigation in place and propose solutions for mitigations on AIPS and MMI.


Where you fit in

The position delivers R&I Engineering services specifically to Trading & Supply in South Africa. In addition, general support services are required to be delivered over all (27) terminals in the EUSA region.


What’s the role?

The Sr. Reliability & Integrity Engineer plays a crucial role in compliance and assurance supporting the facility engineer. Your role is to deliver “best in class” R&I services by providing the required details.

The position involves:

  • Ensure Trading and Supply Operations AMS (Asset Management System) is rolled out, consistently adopted and implemented.
  • D-GAME Reliability and Integrity, maintenance execution and Asset Information Management processes are rolled out consistently, are adopted and implemented.
  • Asset integrity programs are implemented, monitored and results reviewed.
  • Preventive maintenance to terminal assets which are necessary to ensure reliability and integrity are defined in accordance with the DGAME Reliability and Integrity Process.
  • The technical integrity status of the assets within Trading and Supply Operations is known while challenges are being addressed and mitigations are proposed and installed.
  • Maintenance requirements, as dictated by codes and standards are well understood and applied
  • Best practice reliability and inspections tools and techniques are applied.
  • Seamless interfaces between the Reliability and Integrity work process and the Maintenance Execution work process within South Africa are maintained.
  • Work- and communication plans are kept up to date and delivered to relevant stakeholders.
  • Tank, Piping- and Jetty inspection programs are effectively managed.
  • Bad actor program is implemented and maintained while related actions are addresses, or mitigation measures are proposed and installed.
  • Ensure completion of critical maintenance and inspection activities and providing this transparency to management.

Your further accountabilities will include:

  • Development and implementation of the Terminal/Depot Reliability and Integrity Programs (includes TIP/PIP/JIP), in accordance with the DGAME R&I Processes for the assigned terminals within the SA region.
  • Manages, tracks and report the implementation progress of maintenance and inspection programs for critical assets for the SA region.
  • Ensures optimum inspection and maintenance strategy is proposed, in compliance with local regulatory obligations and Shell Group Standards.
  • Ensure all inspections done on critical assets are executed and reviewed to ensure condition meets the minimum requirements before returning to service.
  • Drive improvements in the quality of information provided and accurate risk assessment of repair works.
  • Technically review and signs off repair proposals and scopes for critical assets.
  • Provide assurance of full use of the follow-on actions process to close the loop.
  • Ensure the Inspection and Test Plans for equipment are developed and used.
  • Coordination with the Maintenance Execution Team to ensure the Reliability and Integrity Program is accurately translated into a proactive maintenance schedule and implemented on an on-going basis.
  • Provide support to ongoing engineering items like Rotating Equipment Improvement Program (REIP), Minimum Technical Requirements (MTR) and Risk Based Inspection (RBI).
  • Record, maintain, and monitor Reliability and Integrity performance and targets to ensure correct field implementation of the standards.
  • Conduct technical reviews of facilities to verify satisfactory implementation of the standards.
  • Ensure any delay in execution of maintenance and inspection activities on safety critical equipment follows the approved extensions process obtaining the right level of Technical Authority approval.


What we need from you?

We’re keen to hear from individuals with preferably minimum of 10 to 15 years of working experience in inspection/testing and reliability, care and maintenance of storage and handling related equipment and a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent. Alongside this, we’d hope to see the following on your CV:

  • Skills and further training/qualifications in Codes and Standards, Quality Assurance/Control processes, material science, NDT, inspection, welding, corrosion, or failure analysis desired
  • EEMUA 159, API653 and International Welding Engineering certificates are seen as a huge advantage.
  • Must qualify as MMI (Mechanical, Materials and Inspections) TA-3 in the T&SO Technical Authority structure and pursuit a MMI-TA2 status.
  • Additional proven skills/qualifications related to Codes and Standards, Material & Corrosion science, Non-Destructive Testing, Inspection, Welding, and experience with failure analysis

  • Knowledge and facilitating skills in Risk Based Inspection (RBI).
  • Fluent in English (speak, read and write – business fluency).
  • Skills in reliability and integrity of Distribution related equipment.
  • Knowledge of the inter-disciplinary engineering fundamentals as applied to Terminals and Depots.
  • Skills with maintenance associated of terminals and depots.
  • Knowledge of GSAP.
  • Strong engagement skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships across the organization.
