Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute (SPII) is a not for profit research and advocacy think tank based in Johannesburg. They are passionate about using knowledge and data to support human rights. They combine quantitative and qualitative research and analysis. Our partners range from community members to top policy actors, locally and globally.

SPII seeks to appoint a Fundraising Officer to be based in Johannesburg.

Opportunity type: 6 month part time fixed term contract for 50 hours per month or 2 days per week.

Remuneration: R20 000 per month.

The purpose of this position is to find the ideal candidate who will, within the first month, develop a fundraising strategy with detailed targets and time frames (based on SPII’s five-year Strategic Plan and three-year Operational Plan) to subsequently be implemented. The Fundraising Officer would need to strategise in relation to both traditional and non-traditional funding sources locally and globally, including plans that incorporate regulatory corporate provisioning and social enterprise cross subsidisation. The successful applicant will implement the strategy and meet the targets and time frames once the strategy is approved by the board.

Responsibilities:

Development of Fundraising and Sustainability Strategy:
Develop realistic short, medium and long terms funding strategy for SPII to ensure sustainable development of the institute informed by the strategic and operational plans of SPII. The plan should identify appropriate funding sources and the anticipated level of possible support with specific points of interest for each identified source.
Present strategy, goals and targets to Board of Trustees for adoption.
Institutionalise the fundraising and sustainability strategy within SPII structures.
Develop reporting systems to capture activities against funding agreements and financial obligations, and
Work with the Financial Unit to analyse and report on budget trends.

Implementation of the Fundraising Strategy
Implement the approved strategy. Specifically, but without detracting from the generality, this will include:
Working with the research manager and the executive director, develop the conceptual approach, theory of change and the result framework, to produce cohesive, credible and coordinated proposals based on programme goals and strategies;
Develop all necessary supplementary documentation, including logframes, indicators and M and E frameworks;
Work with an external consultant to establish a social enterprise with income generating targets;
Expand SPII’s formal bank of donors;
Formalise external relations with potential, existing and past donors
Contribute to communications, including writing policy briefs, project reports or related communications outputs where required, and
Provide training to core staff in resource mobilization.

Required:

A master’s degree in International/Development Studies, International Relations, marketing, business administration or a writing-related field.
Minimum of 10 years’ experience in implementing successful innovative, stable resource mobilisation in the not-for-profit South African environment.
Excellent research, organizational and communications skills.
Excellent professional writing and editing skills.
Ability to develop funding budgets in multiple currencies
Willingness to take on other tasks as required.

Only short listed candidates will be contacted. Interviews will be conducted during the week of 24 February 2020. This will involve a ten minute presentation, an oral interview and a relevant finance exercise. Interviews will take place in Johannesburg. If applicants are not located in Johannesburg they will be expected to make themselves available through Skype.

The successful candidate will be expected to start as soon as possible, preferably by 1 March 2020. SPII reserves the right to re-advertise should a suitable candidate not be found.
