The Southern Africa Trust is an independent regional nonprofit organisation, established in 2005, to support organisations in Southern Africa to participate more effectively in policy dialogue so that policies and strategies across the region work better to end poverty.The Southern Africa Trust seeks to appoint interns in 3 positions in Communications/Media, Branding & Marketing, Policy Research; and Programme Management departments to be based in JHB.

The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with the trust but to complement studies, skills and experience. There should therefore be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.

Responsibilities:

  • Communications/Media/Branding & Marketing Intern
    • Qualification in Bachelor’s Degree in Communications.
    • The intern will be expected to be able to assist with the following:
      • Writing press releases.
      • Liaison with local media (newspapers, magazines, radio and television) to gain publicity.
      • Development of communications materials (eg digital, print)
      • Brainstorming for articles, radio & television adverts.
      • Coming up with creative ideas for new media / marketing strategies to promote projects and other interventions of the Trust.
      • Maintenance of social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus etc.
      • Maintaining current databases.
      • Organise functions and events.
      • Participate in events.
      • Assist with other tasks to support the communications work of the Trust in liaison with other communications team members. This will involve some communications administration.
      • Proof-reading reports, events programmes and marketing material for clarity and accuracy to ensure they meet our high-quality standards.
  • Policy Research Interns
    • Qualification:
      • Bachelor’s Degree in Policy Development, International Development, Development Studies or equivalent.
      • The intern will be expected to assist with the following:
        • Assist the Policy and Programmes team with qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis. This may involve review and analysis of local, national regional and international data sources, qualitative research, conducting in-depth interviews and other research methodologies with service users and stakeholders and managing and analysing the research results.
        • Carry out literature and evidence reviews, including identifying relevant research evidence, appraising the quality of evidence and writing up key findings.
        • Support to recruitment and administration of external consultants who will be involved in research.
        • Support to the knowledge management and the knowledge management systems of the Southern Africa Trust.
        • Support to fundraising and other income generating activities, in collaboration with staff, including contributing to the preparation of research proposals.
        • Participate in events and events’ preparation
        • Work as part of the team and actively participate in project meetings.
        • Assist with other tasks to support the work of the Policy and Programmes team as required. This will involve administration.
        • Proof-reading reports, events programmes and marketing material for clarity and accuracy to ensure they meet our high-quality standards.
  • Policy and Programmes Intern
    • Qualification:
      • Bachelor’s Degree Business Administration or equivalent, Policy Development, International Development or equivalent.
      • The intern will be expected to assist with the following:
        • Support to the Trust’s Knowledge Hub.
        • Drafting of Contracts and Terms of Reference.
        • Draft of Concept notes.
        • Planning and organisation of special events (for example Women’s Day, Mandela Day).
        • Assistance to the Executive Director’s office, for example in organising and implementing the Board Meetings.
        • Travel arrangements.
        • Prepare payments and reconcile bank statements.
        • E-filing
        • Participate in events and events’ preparation
        • Assist with other tasks to support the work of the Policy and Programmes team as required. This will involve administration.
        • Proof-reading reports, events programmes and marketing material for clarity and accuracy to ensure they meet our high quality-standards.

The Trust will provide remuneration in the form of a stipend. Costs relating to travel, living and accommodation will however be borne by the Intern. The Interns will be required to sign a code of conduct as well as an internship agreement with the Trust stipulating the terms of contract.

Applicants must, at the time of application have fluency in English (both oral and written proficiency).

Knowledge of French and Portuguese will be an added advantage.

This intern will be supervised by a relevant functional lead or as may be delegated by him/her
