You’ll have to consider the architecture of new and existing features as you work. Build with long term maintainability in mind. Follow design patterns when they’re useful; invent new ones when they’re not. Think clearly and tell us when we’re wrong.
You’ll be improving our data layer, which is common across the platforms we support, and comes with some great bespoke features like nested transactions, undo stacks, ORM, and views. While our data layer is built on the most widely deployed database engine in the world, our sync framework is unique and engineered from the ground up. You’ll pioneer creative ways to add new features while taking maximum care of user data.
We value simple and performant code. We are not afraid of elegant abstractions, but are aware that every one of them leaks. We write code for people to read, but also for physical machines to execute fast.
Knowledge of things like big O notation and computational complexity will come in handy. Experience with optimizing actual code and data structures would be a bonus. You should probably know who that traveling salesman guy is.
If you’ve never programmed in C++ before, but only in similar languages like C or Rust, that’s perfectly fine. We care much more about general abilities than knowledge of specific languages and frameworks. But then you have to show us that you’re the kind of person who learns a new programming language over breakfast. Tell us what awesome things you’ve done in the past, and send us some sample code that shows off your abilities.
If you’ve worked on a similar sounding project and can send us some sample code, even better! Alternatively – or additionally – you’re invited to download our sample project, follow the instructions inside, and then send us your work, preferably in C++.
Our office is in Stuttgart, so if you’re looking for an opportunity to spend some time in the heart of Europe, fantastic, we have a desk waiting for you! Otherwise, you’re welcome to work remotely, like many of us already do.
Ultimately, Cultured Code is a place where you’ll have an opportunity to do something excellent, and we aim to employ people who want to strive for that as part of a team. If you share our values and have a great skill set then we hope you’ll get in touch!
We’ll start processing applications on March 13, with interviews following shortly after. If you only found out about this position a bit late, don’t hesitate to apply anyway. We’ll be able to review new applications until the end of March.
