Title: Software Engineer – Copilot IDE

Location: Remote – Global

GitHub is seeking a research engineer in the area of IDE development in GitHub Next, specifically for the development of the GitHub Copilot IDE plugins and for experimentation with new and interesting user experiences.

Next aims to be a meeting place within GitHub for experimentation with new ideas, and for setting the agenda for GitHub’s product several years in advance. We are a growing team of engineers and researchers working on ideas and technologies that have the potential to revolutionize GitHub and the world-wide community of developers and creators who rely on it for their daily work.

Founded less than two years ago, we have already made our mark with high-impact success stories like Copilot. We continue to build on these foundations while at the same time exploring new projects in different areas including supply-chain security, AI-enhanced static analysis, innovative approaches to CI, and many more. While we are not primarily a research outfit, our work does regularly yield novel results and insights along the way, which we publish at academic conferences where applicable.

The engineer will initially focus on improving the existing suite of GitHub Copilot editor plugins and writing new ones for other IDEs. There is still much to do: our early prototype has been very successful at demonstrating the concept but also opens up a world of possibilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Work on existing and new IDE plugins that deliver the GitHub Copilot functionality.
  • Explore new ways of presenting Copilot’s output, collaborating with external IDE teams as needed.
  • Contribute to a mixed team of software engineers and researchers.
  • Help out in the day-to-day running of GitHub Next: organizing our webinar series, interviewing new candidates, and disseminating research results.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Great software engineering skills.
  • An interest in IDEs and providing a great developer experience.
  • Inclination to prototype quickly and make fast decisions on experiment failure.
  • A creative mindset and good practical skills are more important than formal experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, both in spoken and written form, for expert as well as novice audiences.
  • Interest in modern AI/machine learning technologies and program synthesis in particular.

Ability to meet GitHub, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft, GitHub’s parent company, Cloud Screen upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
