Position: Social Justice Programme Officer 

Reports to: Human Rights and Justice Programme Manager 

Job summary: 

The Officer is expected to operate on the basis of Teamwork. Reporting to Human Rights and Justice Programme Manager the incumbent will be working in TRC advocacy project on social justice within context of TRC projects sites preferably communities affected by capital development projects. 

Qualifications and relevant work experience 

  • Exceptionally good thematic knowledge of extractives, dams, and water projects. 
  • At least 2 years’ experience of social and environmental justice work. 
  • University degree in law or social-sciences or related field.
  • Have skills in community empowerment, lobbying and advocacy.
  • Understanding of public participation within LHDA and mines affected communities’ projects.
  • Understanding of large development projects resettlement and compensation issues.

  • Consistent with agreed principles of correct moral conduct. 
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to actively show willingness to go beyond call of duty (to work overtime and be available when critical assignments need to do).
  • Valid driver’s license and demonstrable experience in consistent driving in both highlands and lowlands areas. 

Key performance areas 

  • Advocate for enactment of national compensation and resettlement policies to aid communities affected by capital projects.
  • Advocate for protection and elevation of socio-economic rights to the level of justiciable human rights. Lobby for legal frameworks that guide consistent and clear corporate social responsibility from investors.
  • Lobby for protection of biodiversity and environment post capital projects (Land Rehabilitation).
  • Under campaign activities that enforce compliance of capital projects to Social and Environment Impact Assessment (SEIA) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP).
  • Lobby, advocate and facilitate community organizations representation in key decision-making process from project conception and implementation. 
  • Work closely with the existing structures to capacitate them on leadership and organizational developments: such SOLD, MACC and CAMAU etc.
  • Train communities and other NGOs on social justice. Assist in coordination of TRC campaigns for promoting social justice.
  • Produce monthly reports and activities reports for the executed project activities. 
  • Perform any other duties which might be assigned by your supervisor from time to time. 
  • Undertake any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
