The role

We are currently seeking a talented Site Laboratory Manager to join our Construction and Pavements team in Durban for the Mpiti to Sehlabathebe Road (91 km) Project in Lesotho.

The position will be based at the Mpiti to Sehlabathebe Road (91 km), which starts in the southwest part of Lesotho, near Qacha’s Nek and then runs along the south-eastern boundary with South Africa, ending at the Sehlabathebe National Park. The project entails the upgrading from gravel to asphalt and is scheduled to run for a 36 month contract period, which may be extended.

Key Responsibilities

With a minimum of 3 years’ experience in an engineering materials laboratory, the Site Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the following elements of the construction works:

• Carrying out processes and quality control testing of all works submitted by the Contractor in the request books
• Control of the site laboratory to ensure timeous and accurate test results
• Submitting summaries of all tests to the ER
• Managing site laboratory personnel, controlling overtime and ensuring that attendance is monitored and recorded and timesheets are submitted to the ER
• Keeping the daily diaries on laboratory testing for reporting on the monthly EIU form as well as information for the Materials and Laboratory Report
• Keeping weather records and submitting the summary with information to ER on a weekly basis
• Assuring the quality of test results – submit duplicate samples for testing with results to ER
• Reporting and preparation of all the test summaries – submit the summaries timeously to the respective Senior Materials Technicians (SMTs) for updating the materials as-built records (list of reporting times is indicated in the quality manual)
• Maintaining hard and soft copies of all materials and test records. Ensuring electronic backup is done weekly, with a copy to the ER once a month. A copy to be submitted to SMEC every 3 months
• Being responsible for the vehicle allocated to the site laboratory manager submit monthly log sheets to ER
• Ensuring that test methods are strictly followed
• Day to day planning and monitoring all consumables to ensure a sufficient reserves to avoid delays in testing
• Verification of all test equipment
• Preventative methods and improvement of test results
• Responsible for assigning tasks, reviewing work and managing performance of direct reports
• Any other required ad hoc duties
• Driving quality and management procedures in site laboratory to result in continual improvement.
• Developing and encouraging good relations exist within site laboratory
• Developing and maintaining good relationships with the Senior Materials Technicians and Materials Technicians and the Contractor’s staff where the site laboratory operates as a combined laboratory
• Responsible for assigning tasks, reviewing work and performance management of direct reports

Key Qualifications, Skills and Experience required

Suitable applicants will have/ be:

• National Diploma in Civil Engineering or better qualification
• A minimum of 3 years’ experience in an engineering materials laboratory
• Knowledge of all the relevant laboratory standards and documentation
• Experience in Government standards, codes and documentation
• Understanding of company policies and procedures that are applicable to the work
• Understanding of the COLTO Standardised Specifications
• Time management
• Communication
• Interpersonal skills
• Computer literacy
• Client focused
• Valid driver’s licence
