Applications are invited from suitably qualified local candidates for the following positions:

JOB TITLE: Sign Language Interpreter Assistant

GRADE: D

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of Sub-Editor, the incumbent facilitates communication between hearings and deaf or hard of hearing individuals during news bulletin live Broadcasting using Sign Language.

MAIN DUTIES

  1. Interpret news Bulletin, official speeches, and national events programmes to the deaf.
  2. Responsible for utilizing technology to provide Interpretation services to Viewers from a distant location.
  3. Needs to understand and explain news and programmes in sign language regarding what is announced or discussed in various situations.
  4. Needs to recognize the subject matter that is being discussed.
  5. Help with communication between the deaf and hearing communities.
  6. Must be able to travel occasionally to various locations.

REPRESENTATIONAL DUTIES

  1. Liaises with other allied organizations on operational matters.
  2. Attends meetings, seminars, workshops, and conferences on matters relating to programming and interpretation.

SKILLS

  • Must have the ability to hear, identify and understand the speech of another person without relying on visual assistance.
    • Must have the ability to speak clearly so that it is understandable to a listener.
    • Must have the ability to see details of another person’s hand shapes, hand movements, and facial expressions at a range from one to three meters.
    • Must have control over the muscles of the face to manipulate the eyebrows, cheeks, mouth, and nose.
    • Must have the ability to quickly make coordinated movements of one hand, a hand together with its arm, two hands, or two hand together with arms.
    • Must have the ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands.
    • Must have the ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists.
    • Must have the ability to move the arms to place the hands slightly above the head as well as extend the arms out toward the front of the body and out to the sides of the body.
    • Must have the ability to control the head to nod and to turn it from side to side.
    • Must have the ability to concentrate and not be distracted while performing a task and sustain that attention over a period.
    • Must have the ability to focus on a single source of auditory information in the presence of other distracting sounds.
    • Must have knowledge of the structure and content of the Sesotho and English languages including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
    • Must have the ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.
    • Should be fluent in both Sesotho and English languages.
    • Should also have good memory power to recollect what has been announced and sign it accordingly.
    • Works effectively in teams with other sign language interpreters.

EDUCATION

  • Sign language interpretation certificate.
    • Two years’ experience working with television production.

RESPONSIBILITIES

For Work of Others

The job requires the incumbent to maintain smooth working relations with editors, news producers, programme producers and librarians.

For Property (Equipment, Materials and Finance)

The job places on the incumbent responsibility to ensure security and safety of the studio equipment, computers, and tapes in his or her custody.

For Effect of Errors

The incumbent is responsible for the errors committed by junior staff in the execution of their duties such as failure to observe safety and operational procedures, which could result in loss of property, equipment, data and software or failure to render the service.

For the Safety of Others

The job places on the incumbent responsibility to enforce and ensure that proper safety and operational procedures are followed to ensure the safety of personnel working under him/her.

COMPLEXITY

The incumbent has the authority to use their own creativity to enhance the structure of the programmes.

PROBLEM-SOLVING

The incumbent regularly solves problems involving video content.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The incumbent is expected to work independently under minimum Supervision by the Production manager.

DEXTERITY

The job requires good eyesight, listening skills and mental capability to recollect what has been announced and sign it accordingly.

CONTACTS

  • The job requires the incumbent to make contacts with:
    • Production Manager, during briefing sessions, reporting meetings and when seeking advice, guidance, and authority.
    • Other utility organizations to discuss issues of mutual interest.
    • Production director during briefing sessions for news and programme production

Usually, the incumbent will find himself/herself under no pressure during news and programmes live broadcasts.

The incumbent may work under very cold conditions within the studios or away during field coverage.

The job is generally classified as a less hazardous one.
