JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Agricultural Engineer, the Senior Workshop Manager is responsible for preparing work plans, budget estimates and reports; supervising all workshop operations; facilitating timely and efficient repair and maintenance of agricultural machinery and equipment; appraising Area Technical Officers (Mechanization); developing diagnostic information; assisting in procurement of spares and accessories; developing training programs; and analyzing staff training needs.
MAIN DUTIES
1. Preparation of Workplans, Budget Estimates and Reports
- Prepares work plans and budget estimates and submits them to the Agricultural Engineer
- Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to monitor and evaluate work progress
- Ensures workshop service requirements are properly budgeted
2. Coordination & Supervision of Repair Workshop Operations
- Ensures proper servicing, repairs, and maintenance of machinery allocated to operational areas
- Maintains and updates inventory of all machinery and ensures safekeeping
- Plans machinery repairs in consultation with the Agricultural Engineer
- Conducts settings and calibration of farm machinery and implements
- Assesses machinery condition and recommends acquisition or disposal
3. Coordination of Services, Repairs and Maintenance of Agricultural Machinery and Equipment
- Allocates technicians and mechanics for major machinery repairs
- Facilitates efficient distribution of spares and accessories
- Coordinates machinery services and maintenance at field level
4. Assignment, Monitoring and Appraisal of Area Technical Officers (Mechanization)
- Assigns duties to Area Technical Officers
- Monitors performance against set standards
- Conducts performance appraisals for technical staff
5. Implements Training Programme for Area Technical Officers (Mechanization)
- Identifies training needs
- Selects candidates and prepares training schedules
- Ensures proper training on newly acquired machinery and equipment
JOB SPECIFICATION
Education and Training
- Degree in Agricultural Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
OR - Diploma in Agricultural Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (with emphasis on agricultural mechanization) plus five (5) years of experience in machinery management, repairs, maintenance, and workshop supervision
RESPONSIBILITY
- For Work of Others: Supervises five or more Area Technical Officers (Mechanization), three or more Agricultural Assistants, and machinery mechanics
- For Property: Responsible for safekeeping of files, workshop equipment, and agricultural machinery nationwide
- For Effect of Errors: Responsible for improper diagnosis and repairs that may cause financial loss and reputational damage
- For Safety of Others: Enforces safety measures such as protective clothing and safe handling of machinery
COMPLEXITY
- Authority for Decision Making: Works independently, sets goals and procedures, and reports to the Agricultural Engineer
- Problem Solving: Resolves issues related to improperly repaired machinery and delayed field operations
- Supervision Received: Works independently and reports weekly to the Agricultural Engineer
- Dexterity: Requires coordination of senses for diagnosing and testing tractors, combines, and equipment
CONTACTS
- Daily contact with sectional staff for duty assignments
- Weekly contact with divisional staff for planning and reporting
- Occasional contact with farmers for machinery assistance
EFFORT
- Mental Effort: Involves mathematical calculations for equipment calibration
- Physical Effort: Requires physical effort during machinery inspection and testing
- Emotional Effort: Requires compassion and understanding when dealing with technical staff
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Unfavourable Conditions: Occasionally works in noisy, dusty environments and high temperatures
- Hazards: Risk of injury from heavy machinery and components
