Sonke strengthens governments, civil society and citizen’s capacity to advance gender justice and womxn’s rights, prevent gender-based violence and reduce the spread of HIV and the impact of AIDS, and in this way contributing to social justice and the elimination of poverty.

Sonke Gender Justice seeks to appoint a Senior Trainer to be based in Johannesburg or Cape Town.

TThe Regional Programmes and Network Unit (RPN) Senior Trainer will report to the RPN Programme Specialist and will provide technical input for a new project funded by Concern Worldwide. The project objectives include formative research and design, capacity building in gender norms transformation through a comprehensive train the trainer (ToT) methodology and qualitative research, focusing on both individual change as well as the impact of research and country partner interventions.

Remuneration:  R324 000 per annum – total cost to company

Responsibilities:
1. Planning, development and implementation
Assist and support with the development of curriculum and provision of IEC
Lead on training and mentoring initiatives
Provide training and advise on community mobilisation strategies
Provision and distribution of project materials
Field support to partners
2. Research
Perform periodic desktop research on different themes and topics assigned by the project specialist
Assist with conducting Focus Group Discussions and in-depth interviews
Provide a report with a summary of key findings and recommendations
3. Training
Conduct training for partner organisations and in-country partners on gender norms transformation
Develop workshop programmes in conjunction with the programme specialist
Ensure that workshop materials and supporting documents, i.e. handouts are in place
Collect workshop materials that will inform the writing of monthly field report
Write and submit workshop reports timeously
​4. Support mid-term project review process
Assist with the reviewing and collating of project documents and reports in preparation for the mid-term project review process
Provide logistical support with regards to hosting and organising meetings
5. Donor reporting

  1. Support
    Support the development of the MenEngage network within Africa and outside through creating country-based linkages with CWW country-based programmes, including undertaking research, running training courses or developing tools
    Attend Sonke/MenEngage Africa meetings, where appropriate and requested
  2. Administration
    Ensure that you are familiar with HR, Finance and Administration and Procurement procedures and ensure that these are consistently adhered to
    Ensure requisitions, quotations and payments are prepared in line with the payment processes
  3. General
    Facilitate a smooth exit from target area at the end of the project period
    Other related tasks as assigned
    Attending staff meetings, staff retreats, staff trainings and international meetings as required
    Requirements:
    Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or equivalent experience
    2-3 years’ work experience in the gender field; experience in the African region and internationally
    Familiarity with gender transformative work with men and boys, including primary social change strategies, key organisations and networks in the region, key research findings and the associated evidence base for the work an advantage
    Experience in training organisations on gender equality
    Familiarity with the Western, Southern and Eastern African region and the Middle East and North Africa region and on policies and programmes relating to gender equality and gender-based violence engaging men and boys an advantage
    Excellent written and spoken English and French skills.  Ability to speak and write in other African languages will be an advantage.
    Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications, i.e. Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and custom on-line applications
    Recognised commitment to promoting gender equality, human rights and social justice
    A valid driver’s licence
    Skills required:
    Ability to work independently, balance multiple tasks simultaneously; work under pressure and meet deadlines
    Excellent organisation and planning skills with the ability to prioritise time and work efficiently
    Pays attention to detail, displays a high level of integrity, able to multi-task
    Excellent presentation and facilitation skills
    Communication skills – the ability to express yourself clearly and concisely
    Report writing skills
    Budgeting and financial management skills
    Relations management and capacity to interact at all levels and with people from different cultural backgrounds
    Willingness to travel at least 75% of the time
