The CSIR has a vacancy for a Senior Researcher in the Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observatory (SOCCO) programme within the Smart Places Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible to conduct research in CO2 measurements, data analysis, chemistry and oceanography. The position is based in Rosebank, Cape Town.

Key responsibilities:

  • Run the CSIR CO2 laboratory, which includes data quality, upkeep and conforming to CSIR laboratory audit requirements;
  • Prepare requirements for long term observations and dedicated research cruises in oceans surrounding South Africa (Atlantic, Indian and Southern Oceans);
  • Ensure that laboratory and observations operations are well planned;
  • Ensure that the CO2 data is archived, quality controlled and delivered to the global data bases annually;
  • Produce reports and publications based on the collected CO2 data;
  • Establish funded collaborations with relevant organisations in national and global ocean CO2 research;
  • Support the human capital development plans of the research group.


Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A Doctoral degree in chemistry, oceanography or related fields with at least five years’ experience in a research environment, of which two years should be in collecting, analysing and managing chemistry data;
  • Experience in running research laboratory equipment will be advantageous;
  • Experience in ocean CO2 analysis will be an added advantage;
  • Must have an interest in project work related to oceans and climate change;
  • Ability to work in interdisciplinary research and project teams as well as individually when required;
  • Must have an interest in conducting oceans and climate change awareness to the public;
  • Must have potential to progress to a research leadership position.
