Applications are invited from suitably qualified local candidates for the following position:


POSITION: Senior Renewable Energy Engineer

Number of Positions: One (1)
Department: ATS
Responsible To: Chief Engineer


Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Chief Engineer, the incumbent will undertake all activities related to the research, design, and development of solar energy systems for new and existing structures.


Main Duties

  • Design solar domestic hot water and space heating systems for new and existing structures.
  • Conduct research and apply knowledge of structural requirements and local climatological conditions.
  • Utilize solar technologies and thermodynamics principles in system design.
  • Carry out testing and evaluation of designed solar technologies.
  • Estimate energy requirements of new or existing structures.
  • Analyse utility bills and calculate thermal efficiency based on structure type and prevailing climatic conditions.
  • Determine the type of solar system that functions most efficiently under given climatic conditions.
  • Calculate heat-generating capacities of various solar panels to determine the optimum size and type for the required application.
  • Repair and maintain solar systems as necessary.
  • Arrange the layout and location of solar system components, panels, pumps, and storage tanks to minimize pipe length and reduce directional changes.
  • Study engineering tables to determine pipe and pump sizes required to maintain the specified flow rate through solar panels.
  • Specify electrical controls, differential thermostats, temperature sensors, and solenoid valves compatible with system components.
  • Prepare part lists specifying all system components.
  • Inspect systems and structures to compile data used in solar system design.
  • Draw wiring, piping, and structural diagrams using drafting tools.
  • Inspect structure alignment, solar panel positioning, and system adherence to design specifications.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Master’s Degree in Renewable Energy Sources with at least two (2) years’ experience working with renewable energy technologies;
    OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physics with at least four (4) years’ experience working with renewable energy systems.

Experience Required:
Hands-on experience working with solar technologies such as:

  • Solar water heaters
  • Solar pumps
  • Solar electrification systems

Complexity

Authority for Decision Making:
The incumbent is responsible for making decisions regarding the purchase and selection of solar panels and related materials required for solar technologies.

Problem Solving:
The incumbent is expected to address technical issues related to solar technology operations and performance daily.


Responsibility

For Work of Others:
The incumbent is not responsible for the work of others.

For Property:
The incumbent is responsible for the safekeeping and proper use of all assigned office and technical equipment.

Effect of Errors:
Errors in design or system installation may lead to equipment loss, operational failure, or communication breakdowns.


Supervision Received

The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Chief Engineer.


Dexterity

The position requires the use of both hands for precise and technical work during installation, inspection, and maintenance activities.


Contacts

The incumbent will maintain regular contact with other members of the ATS Department and may interact with staff from other government departments, ministries, and relevant external organizations.


Effort

Mental Effort:
Requires strong planning, analytical, and decision-making abilities.

Physical Effort:
Minimal physical effort is required. The incumbent may occasionally carry solar panels or related equipment.

Emotional Effort:
Must be mentally stable and patient to effectively handle demanding or unexpected situations.


Working Conditions

Unfavourable Conditions:
The incumbent may be required to work under challenging field conditions in district workshops or beyond normal working hours when necessary.

Hazards:
Exposure to potential electric shocks during installation and maintenance work.
