Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified local candidates for the following positions tenable at the Senate Office. The closing date for the applications is 12th JUNE, 2026
Position Details
- Department: Public Relations Office
- Job Title: Senior Public Relations Officer
- Responsible To: Clerk of the Senate
Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Principal Secretary, the Senior Public Relations Officer will assist the Public Relations Manager in the Senate Communication Strategy and align all public relations activities with ministerial plans.
He/She will also assist in achieving the objectives, programmes and services of the organisation in general.
Main Duties
1.0 To Contribute in Senate Communication Strategy Development Process
- Participate in internal consultations to familiarise with ministerial activity plans (vision, goals)
- Participate in stakeholder analysis and mapping
- Contribute to stakeholder sensitisation
- Participate in drafting the communication strategy
- Participate in the development of the annual plan
2.0 To Manage Crisis
- Participate in the development of a crisis communication plan
- Take part in organising press conferences
- Organise meetings with relevant stakeholders
- Disseminate crisis information and announcements through the media
3.0 To Participate in the Management of Senate Events
- Participate in publicising ministerial events for participation and awareness
- Participate in drafting speeches
- Oversee coverage and documentation of events
- Invite media to events
- Write scripts
4.0 To Maintain Positive Media Relations
- Identify influential reporters
- Update media contact lists and maintain relationships with media houses
- Coordinate distribution of promotional materials to media houses
5.0 To Participate in Maintaining Senate Identity
- Design and produce promotional material
- Oversee distribution of promotional material and display of banners
- Ensure that ministerial sign boards are properly erected
Job Specification
- Master’s Degree in Public Relations, Communications or Media Studies with a minimum of two (2) years working experience as a Public Relations Officer
OR
- Honour’s Degree in Public Relations, Communications or Media Studies with four (4) years working experience in public relations and at least three (3) years as a Senior Public Relations Officer
OR
- Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Communications or Media Studies with five (5) years working experience in public relations and at least four (4) years as a Senior Public Relations Officer
Responsibilities
For Work of Others
- Responsible for supervising and directing all Public Relations Unit staff
For Safety of Others
- This factor is minimal
For Property of Others
- Responsible for safekeeping of valuable assets and documents within his/her jurisdiction
Complexity
- The job demands the ability to read comprehensive documents, press releases, and coverage of all ministerial events
Problem Solving
- Responsible for liaising the ministry with the public and ensuring that the reputation of the ministry remains positive
Dexterity
- Advises on all public relations matters at a ministerial level
- Requires strong mental and visual skills
Contacts
- Maintains regular contact with the Public Relations Manager and other officers within the department during daily operations

- Requires very high mental effort, especially when dealing with public matters
- Requires courage in sensitive situations
Effect of Errors
- Involves significant responsibility for supervising application of communication and security measures
- Errors may result in severe adverse effects on the Government
Supervision Received
- Expected to work independently most of the time and report to the Chief Accounting Officer
