JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Manager Hospital Nursing Services; the incumbent is responsible for management of patient/client nursing care, co-ordination of nursing services. and development of nurses, supervision, and nursing research.
MAIN DUTIES
1. NURSING ADMINISTRATION
■ Evaluates departments for recommendations. changes, and improvement.
■ Determines it ems for procurement in order to support nursing activities.
■ Develops budget estimates for timely submission in order to ascertain funds for the following year.
■ Holds departmental monthly meetings with the nursing and midwifery staff, and quarterly meetings with health center staff, to discuss nursing issues to keep abreast with the developments in nursing.
• Discusses patient’s management plans with doctors other health team members to ensure quality patient care.
• Draws/ reviews objectives, protocols, and guidelines of the unit/ward and disseminates them to all health professionals deployed in the unit/ward.
• Appraises nursing officers quarterly as required for development and training.
■ Takes inventory quarterly to verify that quantities and condition of equipment are up to standard.
■ Checks drugs and supplies regularly to ascertain proper storage, handling, safety and control. Obtains and maintains professional certification of nursing and midwifery staff under her/his supervision
■ Uses current research findings to enhance role performance and increase Knowledge professional issues
■ Models expert practice to interdisciplinary team members and healthcare consumers
■ Participates in multi-professional teams that advance nursing and midwifery practice and health services.
■ Collaborates in creating documented plan focused on outcomes and decisions related to care and delivery of services
• Demonstrates a commitment to practicing self-care, managing stress, and connecting with self and others
Provides leadership in Professional practice and the profession.
Assures that
protocols reflect evidence-based practice
and addresses emerging problems.
■ Participates in key roles in the community, work and professional settings
■ Ensures equitable allocation of nursing and midwifery staff within her department
■ Enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, nursing services administration and the delivery of services
2. CO-ORDINATION
• Harmonizes nursing and midwifery activities for appropriate care.
■ Ensures proper skill mix of nurses for good patient care.
■ Liaises with medical staff and other health professionals/departmental heads to ensure efficient delivery of health care.
• Synchronizes departmental protocols and nursing policies on prevention of medico-legal hazards.
■ Harmonizes nursing work plans from all department for provision of comprehensive care.
■ Analyses departmental statistics for record. report and reference.
• Discusses statistical data with personnel under her for appropriate intervention.
3. PATIENT/CLIENT CARE
■ Ensures implementation of nursing procedures according to policies and philosophy of nursing to maintain high standards of nursing care.
■ Implements expert nursing care to the critically ill and complex patients /clients to assist in quick recovery.
4. SUPERVISION
■ Conducts nursing rounds daily to monitor provision of nursing care rendered.
• Coaches nursing officers on managerial and professional issues for provision of quality nursing care.
■ Intervenes when there is disharmony between nurses, patient’s relatives and other health workers.
5. DEVELOPMENT OF NURSES
■ Recommends staff for further development in nursing.
■ Makes references for nurses for recruitment at work /school.
■ Organizes clinical presentations to refresh and update nurses on current issues in nursing.
■ Allocates nursing and midwifery staff in different wards/units to give them opportunity to practice nursing management skills for capacity building and consideration for promotion.
■ Identifies researchable topics for discussion and submission to research office.
JOB SPECIFICATION
Degree in Nursing Administration plus Diploma in General Nursing and Diploma in Midwifery and three (3) years working experience in the managerial position in the Public Sector.
OR
Degree in Nursing (Generic) and Post Graduate/Post basic Diploma in Nursing Administration plus five (5)years working experience in the managerial position in the Public Sector.
