Reports To: Manager – Metrology Services


Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Manager – Metrology Services, the Senior Metrology Officer is responsible for implementing calibration services, verification and inspection activities, participating in standardization and harmonization processes, promoting awareness of metrology services, implementing ISO standards, and supervising staff within the metrology division.


Key Responsibilities

1. Calibration Services Implementation

  • Facilitate development and evaluation of calibration procedures
  • Supervise calibration exercises in industry
  • Establish and manage a database for measuring instruments used in trade
  • Coordinate metrology-related actions across ministries

2. Verification and Inspection

  • Conduct surveillance on verification and inspection bodies
  • Facilitate development of verification and inspection procedures
  • Supervise verification and inspection exercises
  • Domesticate harmonized documents
  • Maintain database of registered measuring instruments

3. Standardization and Harmonization

  • Contribute to harmonization of technical documents
  • Undertake stakeholder consultations
  • Recommend national positions on draft standards
  • Participate in adoption of harmonized standards
  • Disseminate harmonized specifications

4. Awareness and Training

  • Organize metrology awareness events and World Metrology Day activities
  • Produce promotional materials and reports
  • Submit reports to SADC
  • Conduct training needs assessments
  • Facilitate training for stakeholders and staff

5. ISO/IEC 17025 Implementation

  • Develop standard procedures
  • Maintain laboratory management systems

6. Staff Supervision and Management

  • Prepare annual calibration, verification, and inspection plans
  • Develop and monitor divisional budgets
  • Lead meetings and group discussions
  • Set performance targets and work plans
  • Monitor staff performance

Job Specifications

Minimum Qualifications (any one of the following):

  • Master’s Degree in Natural and Applied Sciences + formal training in standards/metrology + 3 years job-related experience
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Natural and Applied Sciences + formal training + 4 years job-related experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Natural and Applied Sciences + formal training + 5 years job-related experience
