for the following position tenable in the Ministry of Environment and Forestry:
Position: Senior Meteorologist
Grade: H
Responsible To: Principal Meteorologist
No. of Positions: One (1)
JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Meteorologist is responsible for one of the four major divisions of the Department and reports to the Principal Meteorologist. The incumbent oversees operations of the Weather Office, Climatology, Meteorological Applications, or Research and Information. They serve as the operational link with specific client sectors to ensure satisfaction and are accountable for the technical outputs of their division.
MAIN DUTIES
1. AS LINK WITH RELEVANT CLIENTELE
1.1 Assess and identify meteorological needs of various sectors such as transport, food security, water, and disaster prevention
1.2 Develop and implement services tailored to meet sector-specific requirements
1.3 Develop and maintain operational relations
1.4 Build a team of operational meteorologists to serve socio-economic needs in the sectors
2. DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNICAL AND METEOROLOGICAL PRODUCTS
2.1 Conduct research and follow international trends in their service area
2.2 Promote understanding and quality improvement in meteorological services
2.3 Assess the impact of service delivery
3. DEVELOPMENT OF THE DIVISION
3.1 Ensure sufficient infrastructure to support division operations
3.2 Establish an adequate observational network to collect necessary data
4. LINKAGE WITH INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
4.1 Maintain linkages with relevant international institutions and meet national obligations
4.2 Strengthen goodwill between the Government of Lesotho and international bodies such as WMO and UNFCCC
JOB SPECIFICATION
Education and Training
- Master’s Degree in Meteorology or related Environmental Science with a minimum of four (4) years working experience as a Meteorologist
OR - Honour’s Degree or Postgraduate Diploma in Meteorology, or B.Sc. Degree in Environmental Science with a minimum of eight (8) years working experience as a Meteorologist
RESPONSIBILITIES
For the Work of Others
Supervises 1–2 professional Meteorologists, 5 Weather Forecasters, and other technical staff
For Government Property and Funds
Responsible for safeguarding meteorological equipment valued at over M5 million, including satellite receiving equipment and automatic weather stations
For the Effect of Errors
Accountable for ensuring high-quality meteorological data, forecasts, and advisories to prevent significant operational or safety risks
For the Safety of Others
Ensures the safety and operational continuity of staff stationed at remote observation posts
COMPLEXITY
Decision Making
Provides recommendations and advice to the Principal Meteorologist regarding departmental operations
Problem Solving
Addresses service delivery challenges and responds to user demands from sectors like agriculture, water resources, and disaster management
Supervision Received
Expected to work independently and report on their section’s activities to the Principal Meteorologist
