for the following position tenable in the Ministry of Environment and Forestry:

Position: Senior District Conservation Officer

JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Principal Conservation Officer, the Senior Conservation Officer (Operations) is responsible for supervising and monitoring district activities through regular field visits, providing necessary resources (both material and manpower), preparing reports, work plans and budgets for the section, and recommending policy reviews when necessary.


MAIN DUTIES

1. ON-THE-JOB TRAINING
1.1 Provides on-the-job training to newly recruited staff to familiarize them with field activities before deployment
1.2 Occasionally trains district agriculture staff and staff from other institutions in proper land husbandry practices to equip them with necessary skills in sustainable agriculture production

2. PLANNING
2.1 Compiles district progress reports and work plans to ensure alignment with divisional policy
2.2 Prepares project proposals to solicit funding for soil conservation activities
2.3 Recommends placement of staff to districts or areas where shortages exist to ensure equitable service delivery
2.4 Coordinates with the Chief Technical Officer to distribute materials and manpower based on site needs for timely project completion

3. SUPERVISION
3.1 Provides technical backstopping to districts on land reclamation activities such as small earth dams, grade stabilization structures, and biological measures to ensure proper installation and effectiveness
3.2 Supervises, monitors, and evaluates conservation programmes to maintain standards and meet deadlines


KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Qualification and Experience

  • Master of Science (MSc) in Soil Science, Environmental Science, Geography, or Natural Resource Management plus two (2) years’ working experience in the field of soil and water conservation
    OR
  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Soil Science, Environmental Science or Management, Geography, or Natural Resource Management plus three (3) years’ working experience in the soil and water conservation field

Other Necessary Knowledge

  • Supervisory and good communication skills
  • Good map-reading skills
  • Good knowledge of digital analysis
  • Familiarity with analytical software packages
  • Strong managerial and leadership skills
  • Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Thorough knowledge of international environmental care standards and principles
  • Good report writing skills
