Job Mission and Summary
In partnership and collaboration with the Senior Management Team (SMT), Head Pharmacist shall oversee and enforce operations of the Pharmacy Department by ensuring the implementation of the Hospital’s Drugs and Medication plan as well as being accountable to drugs, medical supplies and supervision of pharmacy personnel efficiently and effectively. The role includes communicating with the physicians to determine the type of medication and dosage for patients, taking inventory of pharmaceutical drugs to reorder them based on hospital demand and interacting with pharmacy clients to give them their prescriptions as well as capturing the information into the system for the hospital strategic decision making, reporting and key stakeholders access.

Key Performance Areas:
 Ensuring availability of valid/unexpired drugs and medical supplies within the hospital at all times for both the in- and out-patients;
 Controlling and managing the movement of drugs and medical supplies at all stations within the hospital i.e. pharmacy store, out-patient department, overnight dispensary cupboard and emergency trolleys;
 Dispensing drugs to patients in accordance with good dispensing practices which entail; prescription analysis, proper dosage, adequate labelling, and counselling patients on the proper use of medicines as well as non-drug therapy;
 Management of the Pharmacy Department covering planning and budgeting processes, as well as the general supervision of the pharmacy staff and procurement of the pharmacy equipment, drugs and medical supplies; and
 Maintaining high staff morale and discipline within the Pharmacy Department, maintaining good interdepartmental relations, as well as establishing internal and external linkages and networks for the effective performance of the unit.

List of Duties
 Determine the optimum re-order levels and maintain an adequate supply of drugs and medical supplies at all times;
 Select drugs and medical supplies based on good quality, proven efficacy, cost effectiveness and supplier reliability;
 Store drugs and medical supplies under suitable conditions;
 Ensure safe custody of drugs and medical supplies
 Analyse the medical treatment of patients (drug-drug, drug-food, drug-disease interactions);
 Help patients/client to select affordable, effective and quality medicines
 Dispense drugs to/for the patients;
 Monitor medical treatment of the patients;
 Ensure proper use of medicines and all levels of health care (by patients and health care professionals);
 Bill the patients/customers as prescribed by the policy and procedure manuals;
 Conduct the requisite stock taking exercise on monthly basis;
 Maintain an up-to-date record of the pharmacy stock and provide the necessary regular reports to the respective managers; and
 Any other duties as may be assigned by management from time to time.

Educational Background and Experience:
 A Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent with at least three (3) years’ experience in the pharmaceutical’s role in the clinic and/or hospital setting; OR
 The National Diploma in Pharmacy or equivalent with not less than five (5) years’ experience in a managerial position in the hospital setting;
 Accreditation with the Lesotho Medical, Dental and Pharmacy Council is essential; and
 Possession of Code B Driver’s License shall be an added advantage.

Specialized Knowledge & Skills
 Good communicator at all levels;
 Excellent Negotiating & Closing skills;
 Good IT skills and flexible around different softwares;
 Good understanding of policy setting & decision-making processes within tied benchmarks;
 A strong understanding of management with in-depth health fraternity knowledge;
