The CSIR has a vacancy for SHEQ Officer in the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) portfolio. The purpose of this position is to promote operational efficiency and effectiveness by leading the implementation of operational excellence principles and practices as well as the implementation, certification and maintenance of an operational excellence management system; based on statutory requirements, CSIR policies, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001/ISO 45001 or other standards as required. The position is based in Pretoria.


Key responsibilities:

  • Guide the development of an innovative, effective and efficient SHEQ management system in line with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001/ISO 45001 as well as existing related organisational systems, procedures and policies;
  • Ensure all administration and reporting requirements are performed in compliance with requirements for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001/ISO 45001 and other related standards;
  • Ensure integrated SHEQ manual (s) is/are maintained and all documents are updated as may be required. This includes ensuring that the documentation and record keeping requirements of all relevant management systems meet set standards;
  • Guide the documenting and maintenance of SHEQ policies and procedures and guidelines, ensuring that these are implemented in accordance with accepted and relevant quality principles;
  • Guide the development of SHEQ plans to address productivity improvement as part of a SHEQ improvement program in support of the area’s business strategy;
  • Together with the stakeholders develop SHEQ plans and implement activities aimed at improving operational performance and assist in developing appropriate SHEQ measures for specific areas;
  • Monitor and provide guidance on relevant SHEQ principles for the identification and assessment of risks that may impact on the quality and sustainability of project outcomes;
  • Facilitate the control of SHEQ processes through performance evaluation mechanisms including audits, customer satisfaction surveys, management reviews and maintaining a corrective action system to ensure process improvement;
  • Manage non-conformance/corrective actions through directing non-conformances to the relevant stakeholders, review inputs and give guidance as required to ensure that SHEQ problems are recorded, investigated, analysed and addressed appropriately;
  • Monitor and maintain the Corrective Action Report (CAR) system to ensure that CARs are addressed timeously;
  • Prepare and present regular SHEQ reports relating to operational excellence on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis as required;
  • Conduct SHEQ awareness campaigns and ensure that such communication includes awareness on all relevant policies, guidelines, procedures and systems used to enable SHEQ imperatives.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of the communications programme and provide regular reports as required;
  • Provide secretariat support to SHEQ Committees and ensure that outcomes of such meetings are communicated to the correct stakeholders;
  • Participate in various forums and projects;
  • Review SHEQ file and information system for documents and records relevant to the organisation;
  • Arrange and co-ordinate training of health and safety representatives, first aiders, fire fighters and other SHEQ related activities and awareness;
  • Monitor and maintain the SHEQ intraweb to ensure the latest information is published.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A three year diploma in one of the SHEQ field with at least three years’ experience in the implementation and evaluation of SHEQ management systems;
  • Formal training by a recognised body on ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 / ISO 45001 implementation;
  • South African Auditors Training Certification Association (SAATCA) auditor registration will be highly advantageous;
  • Experience in SHEQ systems as applied to advanced technology environments is recommended;
  • Advanced computer literacy;
  • Good administrative and analytical skills;
  • Ability to write reports, programme and project management skills.
