Location: Johannesburg/Tshwane (remote work)                            Hours: Full-time (flexi hours)

The Equality Collective, based in rural Eastern Cape, is a social justice advocacy and community centred law project. Founded in 2020, the Equality Collective’s vision is to see thriving communities collectively participating in a just and caring society. We are innovative in the advancement of access to justice, build the capacity and infrastructure for collective participation and share research and learnings to create a more just and caring society.

The Equality Collective’s flagship early childhood development (ECD) campaign, that it helped co-found, is the Real Reform for ECD Campaign. Real Reform for ECD is a broad-based alliance of nearly two hundred organisations campaigning for progressive legal and regulatory reform for ECD. The Equality Collective sits on the Campaign’s Steering Committee and helps, together with Ilifa Labantwana, provide secretariat and coordination support to the Campaign.

We are looking for a legal activist who understands that early childhood development (ECD) is a right and wants to organise for community driven and national solutions to ensure an enabling legal and regulatory regime to advance access to ECD services. This person will work from home and must be based in Johannesburg/Tshwane but must also be able to travel for work.

Responsibilities:
Lead organiser of ECD practitioners and principals for progressive change for ECD.
Lead programme and training development.
Organise and facilitate training for ECD Forums, groupings, practitioners, principals, and allies on ECD and the reforms required in the sector.
Cultivate partnerships and conduct outreach and community engagement. Work with multiple ECD partners and help build a broad-based alliance behind Real Reform for ECD.
Manage stakeholder engagement.
Attending and monitoring ECD developments in Parliament and provincial legislatures, building relationships with MPs, MPLs and other government partners.
Assist with secretariat and coordination support of the Real Reform for ECD Steering Committee.
Conduct ECD related law, regulatory and policy research.
Required:
LLB.
At least 2 years of working experience.
Driver’s license and own mode of transport is desirable.
Experience with advocacy and law reform is preferable.
Experience working with people is preferable.
Excellent English oral and written communication skills and strong research skills.
Proficiency in multiple official languages is preferable.
Have a strong work ethic that requires minimal direction. Works well under pressure.
Strong computer skills.
Enthusiastic about our work and willing to help grow and build a social justice organisation in a remote rural area.
