CSA’s Rangeland Restoration Programme combines restoration best practice, planned grazing, job creation, market access and integrated freshwater through land stewardship to enable restoration and sustainable rangeland management at scale within Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany Hotspot. This position provides for dedicated capacity to carry out management of the restoration activities in line with the Herding 4 Health guidelines as well as managing the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of ecological interventions and restoration activities in existing project areas.

The following activities will be required from the successful applicant:
Familiarize themselves with Herding 4 health guidelines protocols by attending a start-up training and self-study;
Provide technical expertise on erosion control, bush thinning, alien removal and planned grazing to CSA’s and partner NRM projects in Kruger to canyons and participating farmers
Design, negotiate and oversee implementation of grazing management plans and restoration plans for participating land users linked to Conservation Agreements
Provide training and mentorship to Ecotrainers and Herd Monitors on relevant topics (restoration, livestock grazing, livestock health, monitoring and evaluation)
Manage Ecotrainers and herd monitors to assist practical implementation of restoration activities
Supervise stewardship coordinator on technical matters and ecological input into Conservation agreements
Guide NRM partners with information on restoration needs in rangelands and follow up work
In collaboration with the Research Director and M & E Manager, conduct and oversee all M&E on restoration activities pertaining to restoration and livestock management
Oversee quarterly online survey using the CSA M&E framework;
Manage field surveys as required
Coordinate the secure data management of GIS and other data according to an agreed data management plan
Participate in presenting findings from the online survey to CSA during quarterly reports and bi-annual MERL (Monitoring Evaluation and Learning) sessions
Assist the M&E Manager to refine existing M&E frameworks of both CSA and partners;
Requirements:
Masters degree in natural sciences, Ecology / Botany / Restoration Ecology / Agriculture ecology or relevant science discipline;
Proficiency using Excel and preferably R data software;
Proficiency in using GIS software such as QGIS and ArcGIS;
A supporting qualification in M&E and NRM measurement is preferred;
This position will be on a 24-month renewable contract, based in the CSA Landscape offices in Hoedspruit, Limpopo.
