Vulamasango – Open Gates is an NGO and registered CYCC (Child and Youth Care Centre), comprising of a residential component (36 children), an After School Care (50 children), and a variety of educational and vocational training workshops for children and youth. Vulamasango provides a place of safety for orphaned, vulnerable, abused, and neglected children, including early childhood care, sustainable academic development, professional health care to combat chronic illness, and a therapeutic approach to dealing with their past traumas.

Vulamasango’s philosophical and educational approach is based on the principles of “Waldorf Education” founded by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. We are thus looking for a Facility Manager who is trained in or at least familiar with the principles and core values implicit in Waldorf Pedagogy, or at least a willingness to familiarize oneself with the said philosophy while working at Vulamasango. A thorough background knowledge about Waldorf Pedagogy is thus a huge advantage for any prospective candidate.

Job Type:                  Full-time / Permanent

Working Hours:        Standard Monday to Friday, 8.00 – 17.00, but with flexibility required for child care emergencies, weekend functions, outings, etc.

Salary:                       R30.000,00 Gross

Their Facility Manager (Residential Care Manager) will be in charge of the OVC (Orphaned and Vulnerable Children), which is the residential part of the project. He/she will manage a Social Worker, Auxiliary Social Worker, (Waldorf) Education Officer, Supervisor Child Care Worker, and a team of 12 general Child Care Workers (Housemothers). This team looks after the 36 residential children and youth (0 -21 years), under the guidance and management of the Residential Care Manager. The Manager will be part of the Management Team at Vulamasango, which comprises of the Residential Care Manager, the Operations Manager, the HR Manager, and the Youth Care Manager (After School Care). This team is being managed by the CEO himself.

The Residential Care Manager will be responsible for:
Delivering high-quality care to the children living at Vulamasango as well as strategic planning for developments and all day-to-day management matters regarding the smooth running of the houses.
He/she will have to demonstrate an ability to build on the well-established principles and standards of practice existing within Vulamasango and proactively contribute to the continuous improvements of these standards.
This includes mentoring and training the Child Care Workers, supervising the execution of job descriptions and tasks, writing of and filing reports with the Department of Social Development, developing educational and vocational programmes for children and youth, implementing standards of quality care, and facilitating conflict resolution between the residents of the home.
It also includes regular communication with the authorities (DoSD, SAPS, hospitals, medical care providers, courts, external Social Workers, etc.), as well as establishing and maintaining administrative systems for children’s records and assessments, to ensure that staff apply them and that confidentiality and standards are adhered to.
Requirements:
3 – 5 years of Management Experience
Code 8 Driver’s License
Degree/Diploma in Child Care or similar would be an advantage
Ability to speak/understand Xhosa would be a great advantage
